Pac-12 Media Day

I honestly don't get the UCLA love. I really feel like I'm missing something there.

I like LaVine. And Parker has potential. In fact, that's the best thing you can say about UCLA is that they haev potential. But the only real "proven" players are Adams (stud) and the Wears. I think Anderson could be great, but he has to be motivated. And who's running the point? Add in my doubts on their head coach, and it's going to be a rough year in LA.
 
I think #4-#8 will be very interesting this year. Who falls in where? I think all of those teams are pretty much equal. Of the five, only 2-3 will make the dance.

As for Dawkins - I really don't get the impression that the folks at Stanford care too much about their basketball program. If it wins, fine. If it doesn't - Hey, we have a great football program! I don't see a lot of alumni pressure to make any changes, either.

They certainly have some of the weakest fan support in the Pac, but I don't know how they could sit by and tolerate 6 years of no NCAA Tournament after making it 14/15 years before Dawkins was hired. If he can't make it this year, it's never going to happen.

Going to be sad to see Spencer leave after this season. What a great Buff, on and off the court. I love the confidence.
 
Watching ESPN's CBB preview show and it's almost like they hate that CU is successful.

"Well we've got Arizona and UCLA picked to finish first and second... (audible pause) and Oregon picked to finish 4th!"

They talked about Utah and Oregon State before the Buffs... I don't understand it...

Really good coverage by the Pac-12 networks. Good to see. Lots of media/content out there. Nationally... not so much.
 
Az fans over at pointguardu.com are reluctant to admit the rivalry forming between the two schools is a reality. Very fusker like. Only difference is, Nick Johnson admitted we were a problem during media day. Called us their "Kryptonite". The Mayor specifically called out UofA saying he didn't think they were the cream of the conference. Maybe it is me starving for a legit rivalry where we can hate someone and circle the game with them, but to me the battle between the two is growing in notoriety each time it is played, and I think the players on both sides realize it.

C.L. Brown: If Colorado had the tradition of Arizona and UCLA, the two teams ahead of it, then the Buffaloes likely would have been the team picked to win the league. It's OK; coach Tad Boyle -- armed with a new contract entering his fourth season -- is establishing his own tradition in Boulder. All-Pac-12 guard Spencer Dinwiddie highlights the list of four returning starters that could have Colorado at the top of the standings.

Love seeing that, but Arizona is a legit Final Four type team. We're not there yet.

UCLA on the other hand...

True, I just like seeing some of the national media holdouts starting to come around. Unfortunately, we need that national recognition to get the attention of some recruits. They need to see us spending a lot of time in the Top 25 polls, and if writers back east continue to operate on old preconceived notions of what Colorado basketball is, it holds us back.

We've come out firing on all cylinders in the Pac and against Arizona specifically. But over Arizona's 30 years of consistent top notch success, they've seen a LOT of teams get some hype and be pretty good for a few years and then fade into irrelevance.

Nick Johnson also said that Boulder was the toughest place for visitors to play in the conference.

The coverage the top 25 provides is vital when you're consistently in it. So far all those saying "the top 25 doesn't matter at all", that's not exactly true.

I understand that we are new to the scene, but I have a hard time believing that we are a flash in the pan. I really think basketball is here to stay in Boulder. There are expectations now. There is a hungry market. There is a large dedicated fan base. The AD could not afford to let that dry up now.
 
The basketball program will remain relevant for as long as Tad Boyle is the coach. Once he's gone, all bets are off. We need to make sure he enjoys a long, prosperous career in Boulder. Think about this, before Boyle was the coach, the head coaches at CU were Jeff Bzdelik, Ricardo Patton, Joe Harrington, Tom Miller, Tom Apke and... Hell, I have no idea who came before Apke. There were two other coaches between him and Sox Walseth, I think. That's seven coaches we went through over about 40 years between being relevant in college basketball.

I agree with you. I Definitely see you guys continuing your success with Boyle. It really doesn't have anything to do with you guys though. Blame Washington and ASU fans for raiding our forums during the down years. Washington fans assured us they were the top team in the west. I prefer the ASU fans though who were claiming that the gap was closing. Those two fan bases made most of the posters sour towards opposing fans. You guys act nothing like them when visiting.

Unlike Oregon football fans, we realize that basketball really did exist prior to 2010. We just sucked at it. Plus, having a national joke of a football team keeps us humble. Sort of.

Something similar to this could have been said about football here in the 90s. :cry:

Programs will go through highs and lows. Where we need to get is to a point where we've had several years of sustained success before we hit another rough patch. This is all still in its infancy for us. We need to continue to cultivate it carefully. If we were to have a misstep this year and not make the tourney, you better believe that the national media who only really pay attention to the blue bloods and the Big East will go right back to writing us off as a permanent sad sack team that has had a couple of good years in their history. Once we've sustained the success we've had the past couple of years for another 4 or 5 (including making 1 or 2 deep tourney runs) then we might be able to afford a down year.

This is correct. New Good Teams come and go but "Brands" AZ & UCLA don't go away.

What Tad is doing is similar to what Romar did. ( To bad you didn't get to see Romar when he had it rolling )
-Eventually Romar got some 5* recruits. Also Romar thought when Lute left he would be able to replace AZ as the top pac-10 team

Every team when they are rolling think's they are rivals with AZ or UCLA like ( Stanford 90's, Washington 00's, Colorado )
-ANd to some extent they are rivals for a few years

But ultimately the AZ & UCLA feel like they are in the "Blue Blood club"
-So Playing Dook, Kansas, UK, is what is most fun for us ( Conference is just a marginally fun thing in comparison )

I Like what Tad is doing and hope it lasts basketball is fun.
