Part of the problem is the media

We've all known that the Denver media blows in their coverage of CU. They either don't ask the tough 'sports' questions, or they hype negative off the field aspects of the program.

Why don't we have media member asking tough questions about the state of the athletic department? They should be harping on facilities, recruiting, donations, faculty support, community support, etc. I rarely hear these things discussed, and when they are discussed, there is no followup questions that continue to the pressure on the school. I think that if the media did a better job highlighting the deficiencies in the program, then you would also see a rise in pressure from the fanbase around Colorado to see the Buffs start getting things DONE.

Aren't we pretty much at the point where we should be thankful for any second the denver media gives us?

We need to sell ourselves better.

Maybe someone here can obtain a press pass representing allbuffs to ask those tough questions? Naaaah, didn't think so.

You want the media on your side? Then pander to them. Have a kickass press box instead of a dilapidated embarrassment. Put out the best spread of any sport in the state for your press luncheons. Advertise during the nightly news on every station. Run a full-page ad in the Denver Post sports section every day for the year. Run ads during all the local sports talk radio shows. That's a start.

We probably could get one for AllBuffs. Is that what we want to be, though? This is a co-op for fans to hang out, goof around, and compile the info that's out there. Do we really want to be a hard hitting news organization that generates original content?

Do we really want "The BCS Beat" as a weekly blog column?

I'm not talking about having the media 'on our side'. I want them asking tough questions about the athletic department and the administration..... which we never see

As soon as the media asked tough questions everyone on here would be bitching and moaning about how tough the media is on CU.

The liasion with the media is Dave Plati. The guy is beloved with the Denver area media as near as I can tell. The goodwill he has with a lot of these guys probably gets us as far as a cushy press box or a first class buffet could. Of course what Plati has been very clear that he doesn't want is exactly what Dio is saying he wants - tough questions, pressure for results, pushing for follow through. Coincidence? In a sense, we're getting exactly what the AD wants from the media, excluding any time there might be a "scandal" for the media outlets to sensationalize... acceptance of where CU is. And if CU were to step up and buy a lot of advertising in papers, on newscasts and in sports talk shows, that's only going to be more true...

I'll bring a frying pan... :smile2: :pan:

Wouldn't another issue with getting a press pass be the amount of information the AD would demand we maintain on our users? That would be a bit of a deal breaker for me...

The Denver media knows that CU could care less about it's football program. If the University doesn't care, then why would the Denver media/public.

Denver media coverage and support of CU would change in a hurry if the University supported the program (that includes financially, advertising, marketing, media relations, etc.).

Honestly I would love to hear Tini throw softball questions at Greg Brown after we give up 50 points to a team and then come on here and defend his questions from the masses.

The media reports what they believe people want to know about/read about.

CU has a vital role to play in the Denver sports media Broncos are always #1 365/24/7 mentality.....when a sports writer spends most of their time and career kissing up shamelessly to the Broncos (how to keep a job in Denver), beating up or being dismissive of CU makes her/him appear to still have some critical journalistic acumen instead of being a lamprey at the Bronco buffet. especially true in the post-Super Bowl Shanny years when the Broncs were a 8-9 win team but everyone pretended they were still "one of the best teams in the AFC". (about the time the "scandal" occurred....hmmmm?)

this is a pro sports first market for a lot of reasons. just how it's always been since Red Miller and the Orange Crush.

Actually been that way since 1947 when CU kicked DU in the balls and joined the Big Seven Conferernce dooming football at DU! Think that didn't hurt CU with the Denver press? The Denver press called CU "Big Time Chollie" and a traitor, rather than congratulate CU on stepping up and repping Colorado nation-wide in sports.

CU reacted by withdrawing to Boulder and letting the locals form an in-bred "Boulder Mafia" which ran the AD and which treated Denver area fans as though it was a privilege to come up to Boulder for a game, any game. That was "okay" as long as CU was the only big-time football in the area. (Tharp was the last of the "Boulder Mafia" choices and Bohn's been trying to make up ground ever since his hiring, but it takes $$$ that the AD has never had! Even now, going into the first year of the PAC 12 cash roll-out, Bohn's first order of business in to pay back loans from the University, rather than use those funds strictly for improvements or salaries [Boyle?] ).

CU's best way out of this historic media hole is winning, while avoiding scandals, until the Pac monies really start to roll in. Then, as the Right Rev. Billy Sol Warbucks said, "You can BUY your way in!"[to the average fans' hearts].

Weren't the terms of the loan be that it would be paid back over a period of years?

There are members of the local media (John Henderson for effing openers) who will always hate CU no matter what (until they die). So eff them with an effing eggbeater.

Why do sacred cow programs never have to worry about a discouraging word being written about them? Because they threaten to cut off access to anyone who crosses the line.

Know what I'd do? Lock them out. Of football and basketball. Unless they get on mother****ing board with what we're doing. If they say "so what, I'm cut off," they're just going to write what they were going to in the first place.

Kisla? Dead! Woody? Dead! HENDERSON?!?!? DEAD!
