WHEN A POWER 5 JOB HAS NO POWER

A source told The Dash that it would not be a shock to see “a Power 5 coach taking a better mid-major” job this offseason. Which raised the question: which football programs are operating far enough beneath their membership privilege to make a group-of-five job an actual step up?

Colorado (19). This is the Buffaloes’ 10th straight losing season, spanning three different coaches. If they can win at Utah on Saturday (unlikely), they will reach five wins for the first time since 2010. Attendance isn’t quite Kansas-level bad, but Colorado still is playing in front of an average of 11,000 empty seats in 50,475-seat Folsom Field every home game. Mike McIntyre had success at San Jose State before coming to Boulder; wouldn’t be inconceivable of him to want to go back to that level.

Forde also speculated Kansas, Indiana and Cal as other positions/coaches who may fit the description for the info he got.

Considering all the personal stuff that HCMM has gone through this year, is it possible that he may look for a lower-stress / higher quality of life position? Could something be in the works at CU similar to how HCMM allowed Baer to leave for UNLV without being "fired"?

Honestly don't understand why a HC would do that. MacIntyre does not strike me as a man who would like to have the word "quitter" attached to his resume.

It's unlikely a mid-major school would pay anywhere near what he's getting now either. What is the top pay he could expect?

Forde had Kansas pegged as the most likely for a reason.

It's not hard to imagine David Beaty taking the Houston job if it opened up if this is about a better job in terms of wins that maintains salary or would even be a raise (he's only making $800k at KU).

But if this is about personal life, HCMM just had a year where he had to miss his son's surgery, being with his father during declining health, and being present for his mother-in-law's passing. That is the kind of stuff that causes a man to do some soul searching.

He said "would not be inconceivable." That's a long way from "may opt to go back."

Why would Houston want Beaty? Their track record suggests they could do better. Unless they are able to crack the nut on getting into a P5 conference, I think they've been successful at being an incubator of top coordinators, enabling them to get big HC jobs.

especially when you miss all that personal stuff watching your team get their ass' handed to them.

Guys, missing major life events with your family is nothing new to the coaching world. Coaching at the collegiate and professional levels is one of the most demanding jobs there is (in terms of time required, family strain, level of stress, etc.), and moving to a G5 job isn't going to be some sort of "break" from any of those things. Not many people are cut out to be a coach at this level, and those that are either accept the way of life or they retire. MM will not leave for a G5 job to escape the "pressures" of CU.

Personal life stuff occurs no matter what job you have. And being the highest paid guy on campus, there will always be pressure to win.

The title of this thread is pretty misleading. Pat Forde has some information that a P5 coach may chose to go back to the lower ranks and he speculates that MacIntyre is a possible candidate based on not much.

I have yet to see a coach voluntarily take a big pay cut.

And you gotta scoop!

There have been rumors that Sonny Dykes wants to be back in Texas. I think he might be the guy looking at making that move if Herman moves on and the Houston job is open. Its not like he'd be taking much of a pay cut given what Houston has reportedly offered Herman to stay. Plus that gig hasn't exactly been detrimental to guys careers as a G5 job given how often their coaches keep getting hired away. However I think I also saw that he had recently entered negotiations for an extension, so it might be something his agent is floating as a plausible power play to get him a raise.

Also I find it hilarious that the profanity filter won't show a coach's name.

Thanks for the link, I hadn't seen a Forde byline in years. When did he disappear to Yahoo? BTW, Forde and Plati are very tight.

Just Stupid.

Anybody think that coaching a quality G5 program involves less commitment than coaching a P5 program? You still have to recruit, but are more likely to have your top recruits stolen at the last minute, you still have to fundraise, the dollar amounts are smaller but funding each donor is even more critical to your programs success.

You still have to manage 85 scholarship players plus a contingent of walk-ons and a full coaching staff. You have to manage academic support, admissions, campus disciplinary actions, etc.

From all indications M2 is happy in Boulder, taking a significant pay cut to live in a place that is not as pleasant for your family makes no sense.

Beyond that all indications are that he truly believes that he is building something here. In his mind the program is just around the corner from making significant strides forward in winning.

If he were at a place with little to no hope like a Kansas, Indiana, or a few of ACC programs it would be understandable.

I could also see somebody like Riley at kNU decide that it just isn't going to work and step out. If he can get them to fire him the money won't be an issue and he can pick where he wants to live.

Overall though, highly unlikely as a voluntary move.

I'm pretty sure this is referring to sonny dykes and a possible opening at houston in particular......footballscoop had this like a month ago. He wanted that gig before herman got it last year

Makes sense. And when you can only go .500 with Goff, what are you going to do without him and with the Cal recruiting restrictions?
