Surprised people haven't brought this up more as we approach spring practices. MacIntyre has said numerous times about how excited he is about Lindsay...

"About halfway through last season on scout team, he started to trust his knee and he just started to take off. He has had good winter workouts and I am hoping that he'll add a great dimension for us at running back. We will see how he does this spring."

Curious to see how he is used in the offense because I don't think he'd be too effective running between the tackles.

I'm trying not to get excited about football. Last year I made it till the day before the CSU game. That said, Lindsay could be a fun kid to watch. It's been a while since we had any sort of play maker at the TB position.

I like him but won't get too excited. Granted it is a different position, but we heard the same hype with Goodson. Once gametime rolls around, he is still too small and not fast enough to make up for it

I still remember the legendary spring reports about how Conrad Obi was poised for a breakout season...then the season actually started.

This. It's very hard to take anything that comes out of the Dal Ward center without a grain of salt these days.

That was also an Embree team. Gillam, Awuzie, and Adkins were talked up pretty heavily by MacIntyre last fall fwiw

It's interesting those players are always brought up and yet the common thread between the three is ignored.

I don't put any expectations on Lindsay. I haven't seen him play. The thing I hear consistently, though, is that he brings a lot of toughness (plays angry). Buffs can use some more of that in the team culture.

Thanks for reminding me again about the Gillam-MacIntyre infallibility principle.

Think his point was that the kids MacIntyre was talking up last fall camp actually produced on the field

That's fine, but a lot of guys look good on the scout team or running drills in shorts, so I'll wait to see how he looks in live action.

MacIntyre talked up Josh Ford too, a perennial spring all-american.

Ford's been injured with a bad ankle injury, not a fair example

Stop, he's been talked up for multiple springs.

You stop the self-righteous ass-clownery. (I know its your MO, but its grown really stale.)

Ford always produced in the spring and was denied the opportunity to show his stuff on the field by Water Bottle and Co. Then when HCMM finally offers him a fair shot last fall, he suffers a high ankle sprain so bad it requires surgery---Not his fault!

As for Lindsay, he has a solid body of HS work, as well as accolades from last fall. He's pretty much the same size as De'Mario Thomas or Danny Woodhead, so, like many smaller players with speed (I'll admit it remains to be seen) what matters is the size of the heart and his motor. Indications are those are very big in Lindsay.

Unlike SRAC's, I'll give him benefit of the doubt.

That fact and the fact that he had SJSU in the top 25 without ever landing a recruit with a legit P5 offer there holds no water here SD. Furthermore, the fact that several guys that HCMM brought into the 2013 class to go with Gillam were outstanding despite being equally ignored by the P5, carries no weight with the doubters.

It's just not possible to be better than the pack, only lucky once in awhile. We can't count on that luck.

It may all be a matter of expectations.

If fans are expecting a guy to come in an be a dominant tailback Lindsay isn't going to do that. This team has no hidden Adrian Petersons right now.

What we have is a bunch of role players. Adkins is the closest we have to a full time player. He showed some flashes last season but I don't think any of our conference foes are spending the off-season figuring out how to stop him. Powell is a banger who adds a different dimension but what he has in power he lacks in speed. He can push the line but isn't going to outrun lots of guys once past it, he also has significant durability questions especially based on his history and running style. Everyone else is at best unproven and more likely best described as limited.

Lindsay in HS did show some significant speed, elusiveness, and explosiveness. Problem is that lots of HS guys show that and can't translate to college. He is small and even in HS wasn't much of an inside runner.

I'm hoping, and until he proves otherwise hope is what we have, that he can become a quality change of pace guy. A threat out of the backfield and a guy who can turn some routine plays into big gains and force teams to pay attention to him creating some space for other guys.

Of course we can spend all off-season talking about RBs and QBs and the rest but without answering some significant questions on the OL none of this is going to matter.

And he's produced when given the opportunity

Tini, I understand you take everything HCMM says as gospel so I'm not going to argue with you on that. I'm merely pointing out that every season coaches tout a handful of players that had good offseasons - sometimes they pan out in the fall, sometimes not.

I hope Lindsay turns out to be a great player for us, but I'm not getting overly excited about an undersized RB who has looked good in "winter workouts" and half a season on the scout team. If he proves HCMM right in the fall then that's a great story.

His use of Lindsay might give us a glimpse of what he might be thinking with Donovan Lee (assuming Lee doesn't get early playing time). I think that there is a place in the Mac/Lindgren offense for undersized guys with some speed. I am hopeful they can get on the field for some screens, short slants, stretch plays and end arounds. His top receivers never had much size while at SJSU.

The issue is that when you have undersized skill position players you need your offensive line to make up for it, and that is a big question mark going into the season. I am hoping that one of the five old freshman (4 RS and a greyshirt) will really impress and be able to push for early playing time. I think that Sully will come in and be one of our better lineman as well. I believe in Forman to be able to change these boys into men with functional strength and I think that is going to be the second biggest factor in whether we can go bowling. Second to seeing some big time growth out of our DL.

If we are able to win some one on one matchups on the offensive line I have no doubt Lindsay will be a pleasant surprise when he is able to get out into some space. I don't expect it to be on inside runs at this point though. We will need an impressive, seasoned OL to make that a reality. But I don't doubt he'll be able to perform nicely with some stretch runs.

How fast is Lindsay really? Seems like the thinking is that his speed will help compensate for his size, but wasn't speed a question mark here, or am I remembering it wrong?
