WAKE FOREST TARGETS COLORADO'S BZDELIK
Friday, April 9, 2010, 04:38 PM EST [General]

Wake Forest has targeted Colorado head coach Jeff Bzdelik to replace Dino Gaudio.

Bzdelik, 57, has been at Colorado for the past three years and spent two seasons in the NBA as the head coach of the Denver Nuggets from 2002-04.

He and Wake Forest athletic director Ron Wellman, a former college baseball coach, have a relationship that dates back to when both were at Northwestern.

Prior to taking the Colorado job in 2007, Bzdelik compiled a 50-16 record in two seasons at Air Force from 2005-07 and went to the NCAA tournament.

Bzdelik has also been a college assistant at Davidson, Northwestern and UMBC - and has been in the NBA as an assistant and scout for 15 years.

Bzdelik would take over a Wake Forest program that has lost three players early to the NBA in the last two seasons – James Johnson, Jeff Teague and this year, Al-Farouq Aminu.

Jeff Bzdelik in play at Wake Forest?

The news that Wake Forest fired Dino Gaudio after three years as head Deac caught us off guard. It felt too soon, and too late in the season to catch a good replacement.

The Charlotte Observer says that may be a good sign. Wake AD Ron Wellman is not known for making rash moves, so the theory is that he has a strong replacement already locked in.

While we feel Gaudio's quick hook is way too sudden, (as do others), we must look forward to some potential replacements. Jeff Goodman of FoxSports.net throws out Jeff Bzdelik as a potential replacement. While he has known Wellman for some time, it might be a strange move; CU just started building a brand-new practice facility for the men's basketball team and Colorado returns one of the more talented teams in the Big 12. Cory Higgins has said he will be back in 2011 and combined with Alec Burks, Nate Tomlinson and a hopefully healthy Shannon Sharpe, this Buffs team could crack the upper half of the conference. Why leave now?

Hey benson and distefano, shouldn't you be hammering to keep this quality coach here? That would be our luck, coach simple jack stays and jeff leaves.

If this happens I've got two words.......

MIKE DUNLAP!!

If he stays, this is where our program starts to turn around for good. If he leaves, it's just another down day for CU Athletics. Moving the 20 year annual Nebraska football game from Black Friday to Saturday was tough to read this morning. This really puts a steak into my heart if it becomes true.

And...Bzdelik's daughter Courtney is a student at Wake Forest. Wonder what bad stuff will happen at the spring game tomorrow. When did CU turn into the Cubs/Clippers?

Bad, bad, bad, bad, bad, bad, bad!

The hits keep coming.

This can't be happening. Lame duck football coach, no women's BB coach and now maybe no men's BB coach. This is a ****ing nightmare.

CU may have broken ground on the practice facility not a day too soon. If Bzz does leave CU would be owed $500,000.

This is where I hope that Mike Bohn signs Coach Bzdelik to an extension. It is supposedly in the works anyway. Bz if 57 years old. Let's make sure he retires a Buff. In 5-10 years (whatever his timeline is), he'll have CU to the point where we are a player in our conference and on the national level on a consistent basis. We need to make this happen.
