What happened to the Buffs after game 5? There are a lot of folks here at All Buffs that are way more knowledgeable than me. How did MM lose the team?

The team faced better players and coaches. The team’s best player was hurt. The coach turtled and so did his players.

Once they choked vs osu, you looked at the schedule and most here knew what was coming. The playcalling got conservative, faced better teams and coaches and the secondary got worse.

Under MM, this team faded down the stretch last 3 years. Why?

I have a feeling there are going to be some players that get run off by the new coach. There's a loser's mentality on too many guys on our roster. Same problem Frost had to weed out the first half of this season. Hell, same problem a lot of coaches have to deal with when they take over a downtrodden program. Head coach had a weak mindset and mentality and it rubbed off on too much of the roster, especially the O-line.

I'd start with Ronnie Blackmon-I remember FHCMM talking about punt return being an area we needed to improve on during the bye. Blackmon muffed one, nearly muffed another, and KD Nixon (who Roper sent out there because he didn't trust Blackmon) muffed one and gave Cal 7 points in the process.

How many punts did KD practice catching this week? KD probably said put me out there I will do it.

I think the predictability in both Offensive and Defensive play calling did them in. You get a lot of film built up, it all looks the same and then the better teams are already more athletic and know whats coming.

Injuries hurt also, but I hate how this staff does not rotate in younger players here and there to get experience!!! Arias is a stud, Jackson is a stud, Rakestraw has ability but needs reps, and Fontenot should have at least got in here or there.

Sad to look back now

No matter what, we have a new coach and coaching staff to look forward to. Cupboard isn’t bare. At least we have something to look forward to for the next few months.
You mean weeks. Weeks.

Once the announcement is made, heads will explode and some significant bitching will ensue. Especially if it takes more than a month.

:D

This staff is likely all gone with 1-3 exceptions, tops.

What pisses me off the most is this team had me believing in them. Then to drop seven in a row was it for me. It almost would’ve been better had they struggled to 5 wins instead of looking really good for 5 and dog **** for 7.
Just like last night - I think I would have preferred a Utah-type result (when we played them...not the BYU game). The fact that that game was in their grasp with the COACHES and PLAYERS giving it away was almost too much to "bear".

They showed Rick George in the sidelines during the game. Anybody that went; was he just flat baffled as the rest of us? Roper was shown multiple times just shaking his head wondering WTH just happened.

Every time they shows jay Mac, he looked angry and out of sorts.

Not blaming him at all, but I think the players mailed the game in.

I mean, three interceptions is so unlike Montez, especially the way they happened. Think they threw the game because they were mad about the firing?

I’m referencing players here.

No way they intentionally gave up! Some may have mentally not wanted to win because of fatigue. They want a new dynamic coach to pick them up, and not practice for 3 weeks with old coaches.

The next 7 days will be historic for the Buffs. Please get it right RG!

Last night’s erratic performance was predictable.

That team had been through a lot over the course of the last two months. Emotionally. Physically. And we (certainly I do) tend to forget they are for the most part kids, not seasoned adults, who don’t process adverse conditions rationally all the time. Once the wheels came off in the OSU game, they began to question everything. Themselves. Their teammates. Their coaches. In hindsight, it was probably a forgone conclusion they were going to fold. It was merely a question of what it would look like. They just did it in spectacular fashion out of combination of apathy and frustration.

The consensus here is the coaches have to go, regardless of a few with merit. Some of the returning players will likely have to go as well - by either their own choosing or by fiat. It’s going to be a bumpy road for a while. If next season is marginally successful, we should all be pleasantly surprised.

No team leadership at the player level. I think some ego's in the coaches rank and definitely at the player level divided the room.

Woke up this morning remembering I don’t have to watch “McMillian up the middle for 1 yard on first, Montez scrambling for his life and throwing it away on second, and bubble screen to Viska on third” ad nauseum for the next 9 months like

When I jumble all of the things in my head, leadership, mentality, injuries, etc., it all comes back to one thing: A horrible coaching staff. At least at the HC/OC/DC levels. I felt like Mac blamed everyone and everything rather than take charge and rally the team. Has anyone ever had a boss that casts blame? The players lost faith in themselves because the boss lost faith in them. That’s my totally perceived opinion.

To me what's frustrating? Is the way we finished the season on such a death spiral. Was really wanting some positive direction to close it out. This team does not deserve a Bowl game and it would have really been an awkward couple weeks.
This is going to be a VERY long offseason.

What gives me the most hope is that both the talent and the leadership is concentrated in the 2017 class.

They'll be 3rd year guys in 2019, ready to take over the locker room. That group of guys is not soft and they want to win. I have a good feeling that they will embrace change because they are frustrated.
