Post-Spring Depth Chart

LB & S are concerning.

Not feeling too terrible about the rest of it, though.. we just might win a couple of games this year if Mac & crew aren't clueless.

I have been saying since January this team will be decent on offense and awful on defense. Spring ball just reinforced it.

If you are right it will still be a major step in the right direction. I don't disagree with you and spring practice surely made this prediction the odds on favorite. BUT, I want to believe with HCMM's background on the d side of the ball, combined with some young talented DBs that got thrown into the fire last year but should be better this year...maybe the D will be slightly improved at least.

If our O goes from 12th in the pac 12 to maybe 8th and our D goes from 12th to 10th that should be worth a total of maybe 4 or even 5 victories. That is a good stretch goal I think.

If CSU doesn't throw deep downfield on the first drive I'd be shocked. And I don't know if we can stop it even if we know it's coming.

Does CSU have any burners at WR? I would think that Hendo or Crawley could handle man to man against CSU.

There are a lot of reasons for optimism on both sides of the ball. O will be better with p rich and a clearer game plan to execute. If wood plays well the o could be good. Better o is a big help for the d. 3 and outs kill the d effort. We have much more experience in secondary. Plus having two coaches dedicated to dbs vs one DBS coach and coord should help a ton. Finally it would take major, focused effort to be worse than last year.

We should at least have game planning with corrections in real time. What a nice change that will be. I'm most afraid of execution, especially as they rotate OL, and lots of turnovers.

I don't believe for a second that a MacIntyre defense will be helpless out there. People are going to be surprised.

It would be an opposing coaches obligation to test our secondary early and often based on existing evidence (spring game, news articles, last seasons performance).

In the best case scenario, the spring game was a combo of (1) call off secondary coverage to deceive opposing coaches (CSU) watching the game and then unleash the real defense in the opener, (2) call off secondary coverages to build Wood's confidence going into the break, (3) put on an arial show for the P12 network.

I'd like to believe all of the above because its clever and makes us out to be better than we've shown, but I need to see us adequately pass defend before I share any defensive optimism.

Looking at our depth chart is like watching the beginning of Major League.
I guess I don't see what's so awful about it when the goal is 4 wins, especially the offense. Obviously you'd like for it to be better but for the start of a rebuilding project (again) it's a decent start. Still need depth at LB, OL, CB, and S though.

Our D is going to be much better against the easier teams. Just having 11 guys not running around like chickens with their heads cut off or afraid to make the innevitable mistake putting JE into a rage of profanity should make them better. Also having defensive coaches that understand how to install and adjust at a level that college players can handle will make a big difference.

We are still going to be overwhelmed by teams that simply have more talent than we can handle but CSU isn't one of those. Hendo, Crawley, Yuri are as good as any athletes CSU can throw out there. They may go to 4 WR sets but their 3rd and 4th guys aren't like the #3 and #4 guys that USC is putting out there (neither are their #1 or #2.)

It's not an all-star team, but it's also not as thin as the depth charts from the past several years. The incoming freshmen will flesh this out. But the good thing is that any true frosh who makes the 2-deep will do so because he is ready to play, not because we've got to plug an athlete to fill a glaring hole. I really think that HCMM can work with this.

I'm not predicting an Pac-12 title or anything, but I see a roster that can compete.

Yuri Wright is not ready to play a significant amount of time against any team on the schedule.
