Pro Track and Field Buffs (& current Buffs in pro races)- 2019 news and highlights (Emma Coburn 2nd at World Championships!)

Not any surprise, but Emma Coburn takes care of business and wins her prelim heat of the 3000M steeplechase.

And, article on yesterday's action-

Buff greats Jenny Simpson and Emma Coburn both earned spots on the U.S. team for the World Championships being held later this year in Doha, with Jenny Simpson yesterday finishing 2nd in the 1500M (she's now have made every U.S. World Championships and Olympics team since 2007), while Emma Coburn today won her 6th straight and 8th out of 9 years U.S. Championship in the 3000M steeplechase.

BIG congrats to both!

Recaps of the 3rd and 4th days of the U.S. Championships -

Wanted to mention that recent grad and hurdler Gabby Scott (who is on the Puerto Rican team for National meets) is scheduled to be running in the 1st round (semi's) of the Pan Am Games' 400M hurdles in less than 2 hours, with the 1st heat scheduled to start at 3:15 PM MT (if I'm getting the time zone for the schedule right). The Games are in Lima Peru this year.

Best wishes to her!!!

Track and field schedule / Live results (I'm guessing the times listed are for Lima, which looks to be one hour ahead of U.S. Mountain time) - https://wrsd.lima2019.pe/PAG2019/en/results/athletics/daily-schedule.htm
(For those who advance, looks like the women's 400M hurdle finals are scheduled for 4:55 PM MT on Thursday (August 8th). From that schedule, I can also see Ms. Scott is in semi #1 (of 2). Just going off seed times, looks like it will be a GREAT result for her if she advances.)

Note - ESPNU's schedule is showing Pan Am Games coverage through 5:00 PM MT today, so if they happen to be showing track and field at that point, her race may be on TV. (They are of covering all Pan Am game sports (soccer is currently on), so hard for me to know what they're going to be showing at any point.)

As often happens in track, looks like it's a "so close yet so far" finish for Gabby Scott, who just missed (by 0.18 seconds) qualifying for Thursday's final.

Sounds like Gabby Scott still gets to race at least one more time at the Pan Am Games. (Per the schedule linked to in post #34, looks like the relay should start this Saturday at 3:40 PM MT.)

Just wanted to mention over the next week, all the Diamond League champions will be crowned after races in Zurich (tomorrow) and Brussels (next Friday Sept. 6th). (As I've mentioned previously, the Diamond League is THE professional track league where the best in the world compete.)

Both Emma Coburn and Jenny Simpson will be running their championship races tomorrow, with Ms. Coburn's steeplechase race scheduled to start at 12:23 PM MT and Ms. Simpson's 1500M run scheduled to start 12:48 PM MT, with coverage on the NBC Sports Network for the meet scheduled to start noon MT.

Live results - https://zurich.diamondleague.com/en...ule#ScheduleInit#Zurich2019_CURRENTEVENT_JSON

Best wishes to both Buff greats!!!

(Edit - a couple Instagram posts from them-

Wanted to mention Buff great Jenny Simpson is towing the line in "her"*** race, the 5th Avenue Mile, in NYC, with coverage on NBC starting at 10:30 AM MT today. (Per https://www.nyrr.org/races/newbalance5thavenuemile#heatschedule, the women's race is scheduled to start at 10:40 AM MT. )
(***she's won a record 7 of them, and believe somewhere from 4-6 in a row. The race is also sponsored by her shoe company (New Balance), AND she has done lots of work (especially working with children) with the race organizer (New York Road Runners (NYRR).)

(Seeing this race is today highlighted out to me how different this year's track and field schedule is. Typically this is often the finale for most 1500M/ elite mile runners (esp. from the U.S.) like Ms. Simpson, but this year the World Championships in (HOT) Doha are still almost 3 weeks away from starting.)

Congrats to Ms. Simpson, who does win the 5th Ave. Mile in a tight one against one of the up and coming younger professional American runners! (Believe the announcers also said she broke the course record (which I think (???) they might have said was 28 or so years old).)

Best wishes to the trio of #ForeverBuffs as the World Championships, THE biggest meet in over 2 years (since the 2017 Championships), begin tomorrow in Doha, Qatar!

Preview -

BOULDER — The world's best track and field athletes are heading to Doha, Qatar, to compete at the 2019 IAAF World Track and Field Championships, September 27-October 6, and that includes three former Buffs and Olympians, Jenny Simpson, Emma Coburn and Jeremy Dodson.

None of these athletes are strangers to the international stage as each have been racing on the world stage since their days at CU. This will be the seventh world championship for Simpson, while it is the fourth world championship for Coburn and the third for Dodson. Each has also been to the Olympic Games. Simpson has been to three Olympic Games, while Coburn has been twice and Dodson once. At the 2016 Games in Rio, Simpson and Coburn each won the bronze medal in their respective event.

Coburn will race first at the championships in the 3,000-meter steeplechase. The former American record holder is currently ranked fourth in the world and is the reigning champion as she won the meet in 2017 for her first international medal. She recorded a time of 9:02.58, which at the time was the American record. The semifinals of the steeplechase are on Sept. 27 and the finals will take place on Sept. 30.

Simpson, a volunteer coach for the Buffs, has also seen a great deal of success at this meet, winning the 1,500-meter world title in 2011. She took home silver in 2013 and 2017. Simpson was also the 2014 IAAF Diamond League 1,500-meter Champion. She is one of the most decorated middle distance athletes in American history and looks to continue that streak. The first round of the 1,500 is set for Oct. 2, while the semis are the following day (Oct. 3). The finals will be Oct. 5.

Dodson will compete in the 200-meter dash. The first round is scheduled for Sept. 29, while the semis will follow on Sept. 30. The finals will take place on Oct. 1.

ABOUT THE 2019 IAAF CHAMPIONSHIPS:
  • The IAAF World Championships are typically held in August, but this year have been moved to the end of September due to the heat in Doha. While the temperatures will be warm, the track will be air conditioned.
  • Doha will become the first city in the Middle East to host a world championship and this will be the biggest sporting event the country has ever seen.
  • This year there will not be morning sessions. Instead, there will be split evening sessions.
  • Both marathons will be run at night, starting at 23:59 local time, but temperatures are still expected to be about 77F.
A complete schedule for the former Buffs is listed below. For more information, checkout USATF.org.

Nice job by Emma Coburn in her steeplechase qualifier as she takes over the lead with 2-3 laps left and opens a safe gap for herself and a couple other runners to the rest of the pack so that she easily makes it to the final as one of the three auto-qualifiers for Monday's final with a 2nd place finish.

Congrats to Jenny Simpson on advancing to tomorrow's semi-finals of the women's 1500M at the World Championships.

"
DOHA, QatarJenny Simpson, a former University of Colorado runner, earned a spot in the semifinals of the 1,500-meter run at the 2019 IAAF World Championships on Wednesday.

Simpson recorded a time of 4:07.27 to win the third heat. The top six finishers in each of the three heats automatically advanced, while the next six fastest finishers earned a trip to the semis on Thursday at 2 p.m. MT.

Ms. Simpson is never really in this race, and finishes 8th.

It was a video game quality race, as Championship races are usually tactical, but this one went out fast from the beginning, with the eventual winner leadiing pretty much wire to wire and finishing in a blazing 3:51. (The world record is 3:50.07.) Ms. Simpson was interviewed after the race, and seemed satisfied, as she ran her season's best by quite a bit, and was only ~1.2 seconds off her career best. (Another American broke the U.S. record by over a second, and that still didn't get her a podium finish, as she ended up in 4th.)

VERY nice result for Buff redshirt senior (for track) Makena Morley. Congrats to her!
(Although she is thankfully still a current Buff, figured I'd put this in this thread since she was racing against many pros.)

"
MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. — University of Colorado runner Makena Morley earned a second-place finish on Sunday, Oct. 6, at the USATF 10 Mile Championships.

Morley, who has exhausted cross country eligibility but has an indoor and outdoor track season left, finished the race in 53 minutes, 17 seconds. The only racer to beat her was Sara Hall, who has now won the championship three straight years. Hall finished just six seconds before Morley (53:11).
...

"We didn't want her to be bored to tears hanging around Boulder grinding out mileage with nothing to look forward to," head coach Mark Wetmore said. "So she and [associate head coach] Heather (Burroughs) dreamed up this idea of jumping into the championship and I went along with it. She outran my expectations for sure. I thought she would run in the middle to high 54's; she ran in the low 53's. She beat some pretty good professionals and probably put the word out for next July that another good national level Buff is coming out."

With this race complete, Morley will turn her attention back to the track for her final season where she is Colorado's 10,000-meter run record holder (32:28.58).
