I have been lazy starting this (Annual) thread, but will be adding more detail for all the great racing that will be occurring and has already occurred for the Pro Buffs this (Olympic) year, as well as any activity for future or current Buffs in races or Championships that include Pros.

I wanted to quickly start this thread now, as the U.S. Olympic Marathon Trials, being shown some where on the NBC sports platform(s), are scheduled to start today at 8:00 AM MT today. (They are in Orlando.)

AT minimum, I believe there are at least 3 #ForeverBuffs I know about (all in the women's race) competing. (There could easily be more.)

Had time to get a little more info on today's marathon trials:

1) Coverage starts at 8:00 AM MT from Orlando, with the men's race scheduled to begin 10 minutes after that at 8:10 AM and the women following a little after that at 8:20 AM MT. (This is per https://www.sportingnews.com/us/oly...ream-time-2024-paris/7319891b46822255030e25eb .)

(In an unrelated note, believe there is some controversy that, even in winter, Orlando wasn't the best choice for the Trials due to the relative heat and humidity, and if it was to be held there it should start even earlier than it is (10:00 AM local time).)

2) Live coverage looks to be available only through streaming (either Peacock, nbc.com and/ or the nbc sports app), with the races later being shown on tape delay beginning at 10:00 AM MT on NBC itself.

3) Trials homepage is https://www.usatf.org/events/2024/2024-u-s-olympic-team-trials-—-marathon .

4) Live results of the leaders will be available at https://track.rtrt.me/e/ORLANDO-TRIALS-2024#/leaderboard/top-men-marathon .

5) Not sure if all are running, but based on a roster of entrants I found at https://www.orlando2024trials.com/i...1000&cntnt01sortorder=ASC&dir=ASC&filter=full , quite a few Buffs are looking to pull an upset and earn a top 3 finish today, or if nothing else have individual victories with great personal performances.

Excuse me in advance if I miss some one, but the names which rang a bell to me as #ForeverBuffs entered to race today are:

Men's race - Charley Sweeney, Paxton Smith

Women's race - Sara Vaughn, Makena Morley, Laura Thweatt, Carrie Verdon, Mackenzie Ann Caldwell and Jenny Simpson.

Best wishes to all racing today!

Note - just looking at the 1st time they have listed, looks like the times in the below tweet are all in local (Oregon / Pacific) times.
Edit - Also, it looks to me like they have the wrong time listed for tonight's 5000M women's 1st round races. Per the schedule I link to in my last post above, the 5000M is scheduled to begin at 6:22 PM PT (or 7:22 PM MT). (It's the 1500M 1st rounders that are scheduled to begin at 5:22 PM PT.)

Hertenstein's Outdoor Season Comes to an End at Olympic Trials

Nichols and Hurta-Klecker advances to next round

By: Herman Shelton, Associate Director/Athletic Communications

EUGENE, Ore. – Colorado's Bailey Hertenstein saw her season come to a close after finishing 13th at the 2024 U.S. Track and Field Olympic Team Trials at Hayward Field on Friday evening.

Hertenstein ran in Heat 1, the fastest heat of the two. She stayed with the front pack until the 3,600-meter mark when the pack started to separate. Hertenstein could not recover and had to depend on her time, which fell ten seconds short. The top six finishers and the next four fastest advanced, all of whom came from Heat 1.

Former Buffalo Sage Hurta-Klecker started the day with the sixth-best time, finishing second in her heat for the automatic qualifying spot and moving on to the semifinals with a time of 2:01.30. The semifinals will take place on Sunday, June 23, at 7:11 p.m. MT. Abby Nichols advanced to the finals after posting the sixth-best time, 15:27.55, in the 5,000-meter run. The finals will take place on Monday, June 24, at 8:09 p.m. MT.

Avery McMullen will be the next Buff to see action, participating in the heptathlon on Sunday, June 23, starting with the 100-meter hurdles at noon.

Fans can see live action on the NBC family of networks and streamed on Peacock. For updated information, visit USATF.org.

It's I believe one of the busiest day of the Championships for the (Forever) Buffs, with 5 women in action in 4 different events, with Avery McMullen already having started her day in the heptathlon with a solid long jump, while the runners will be in action this evening, with the main coverage beginning on NBC (and streaming on Peacock) beginning at 6:00 PM MT.

McMullen Competes for Olympic Spot in Heptathlon at Hayward Field

Former Buff Hurta-Klecker advances to 800m Finals

By: Herman Shelton, Associate Director/Athletic Communications

EUGENE, Ore
. – Colorado's Avery McMullen competed on the national stage for a spot in the heptathlon on the United States Olympic Track and Field Team on Sunday, June 23, at Hayward Field.

With day one in the books, McMullen sits in 15th place with 3,499 points.

McMullen started the day in the 100-meter hurdles, finishing in 12th place with a time of 13.55, two-tenths of a second off her personal best. She improved her position in the high jump, clearing the bar at 1.70 meters to tie her season best for a 12th-place finish, moving up to 12th overall. A 17th-place finish in the shot put with a throw of 11.30 meters dropped her to 17th place. In the final event of the day, the 200 meters, McMullen ran the sixth-best time of 23.95, winning her heat and coming within one-tenth of a second of her personal best, to move up to 15th place going into the final day of the heptathlon.

McMullen will begin day two in the long jump at 11:00 a.m. MT, followed by the javelin throw at 12:10 p.m. MT, and conclude with the 800 meters at 7:37 p.m. MT.

Former Buff Sage Hurta-Klecker advanced to Monday's 800-meter finals after placing second in her heat to earn an automatic qualifying spot with a time of 2:01.11. It took three tries to get the heat started after two false starts. Hurta-Klecker made her move at the 300-meter mark and held the lead until Raven Rogers made her move in the final 100 meters, lunging to take the lead at the finish line. The final will take place at 8:32 p.m. MT on Monday, June 23.

Fans can watch live action on the NBC family of networks and stream it live on Peacock. For updated information, visit USATF.org.

Article after yesterday's action - https://cubuffs.com/news/2024/6/24/...hes-14th-in-heptathlon-at-2024-olympic-trials
(Heartbreak for #ForeverBuff Sage Hurta-Klecker as her chances for an Olympic berth in the 800M finals largely ended when she got tripped after race favorite and the defending Olympic Champion Athing Mu went down at around the 300M mark. Although Ms. Hurta-Klecker was able to keep her footing, the loss of ~10 meters and some forward momentum proved too much for her to overcome against the tough field. She did continue to fight hard and ended up 5th, so just 2 spots from being an Olympian at that distance. One small consolation is that she's also running the 1500M, so she still has a chance at advancing to Paris..

On the bright-side, both Ms's. Constien and Boreman qualified easily for the steeplechase final.)

Note- The Championships are now on a scheduled 2 day break, and will be re-starting Thursday.

McMullen Finishes 14th in Heptathlon at 2024 Olympic Trials

By: Herman Shelton, Associate Director/Athletic Communications

EUGENE, Ore. – Colorado's Avery McMullen placed 14th in her final outdoor event in the heptathlon as a Buffalo at the 2024 United States Olympic Track and Field Trials at Hayward Field.

McMullen came into day two in 15th place with 3,499 points. She started day two with a sixth-place finish in the long jump, with a mark of 6.12 meters, moving her up to 13th place with 4,386 points. In the javelin, McMullen's 34.98-meter toss was good for 10th place and kept her in 13th place with 4,957 points. McMullen concluded her Olympic trials in the 800 meters, completing the race in 2:20.51 for a 13th-place finish and completing the heptathlon in 14th place with 5,774 points.

Former Buffs Valerie Constien and Madie Boreman advanced to the finals after finishing second and fourth, respectively, to automatically qualify for the finals in the 3,000-meter steeplechase. In the 5,000 meters, Abby Nichols couldn't get out of the middle of the pack and finished 10th, ending her Olympic trial run.

The race of the day was the women's 800-meter run. Favorite Athing Mu fell at the 300-meter mark going into the backstretch curve, almost taking out Sage Hurta-Klecker. Hurta-Klecker jumped over Mu and could not recover, finishing fifth.

Hurta-Klecker will have a few days to recover as the trials will take a two-day break. The trials will resume on Thursday, June 27. The Buffs will have the most athletes competing in one day in the men's high jump (Scottie Vines), the women's 1,500 meters (Hurta-Klecker, Dani Jones, Micaela Degenero, and Rachel McArthur), the women's and men's 400-meter hurdles (Abbey Glynn and Cole Romig), and the final of the women's 3,000-meter steeplechase (Valerie Constien and Madison Boreman).

Fans can watch live action on the NBC family of networks and stream it live on Peacock. For updated information, visit USATF.org.

Article after an overall nice day for a majority of the Buffs, highlighted by Ms. Constien's U.S. Championship win, and many more Buffs advancing to later rounds! - https://cubuffs.com/news/2024/6/27/...is-2024-with-record-breaking-steeplechase-win

Note - Also wanted to give special mention incoming Buff Scottie Vines, who finished top 12 in the high jump to advanced to the finals! (At least in the last MANY years I've been following the team. I can't think of any CU freshmen or sophomores who've advanced to Trial finals let alone an incoming Buff.)

Constien Punches Ticket for Paris 2024 with Record-Breaking Steeplechase Win

Former Buffs Shine at Olympic Trials; Vines, Glynn and Romig Advances

By: Herman Shelton, Associate Director/Athletic Communications

EUGENE, Ore.
– Former Colorado Buffaloes athlete Valerie Constien earned a spot on the United States Olympic track and field team for her second consecutive Olympic Games with a victory in the women's 3,000-meter steeplechase final. She finished with a time of 9:03.22, setting an Olympic Trials record and achieving a personal best at Hayward Field.

Incoming freshman Scott Vines continues his successful season, advancing to the finals in the high jump after clearing 2.19 meters.

Colorado's Abbey Glynn and Cole Romig both advanced in the 400-meter hurdles. Glynn advanced after placing third in her heat with a time of 56.94. Romig advanced on time, finishing 24th with a time of 51.50.

Four former Buffs competed in the 1,500 meters. Sage Hurta-Klecker and Dani Jones advanced to Friday's semifinals after automatically qualifying in their respective heats. Jones posted the fifth-best time in the fastest heat, while Hurta-Klecker finished second in her heat with the 25th-best time overall. Micaela Degenero just missed the cut after finishing ninth in her heat and posting the 20th-best time. Rachel McArthur finished 33rd.

In the 3,000-meter steeplechase, Constien used the last 300 meters to break away from the pack, winning by three seconds and setting a meet record and a personal best of 9:03.22. Nine runners posted personal bests. Constien's time ranks third on the U.S. all-time steeplechase list, just behind Emma Coburn, after recovering from ACL surgery a year ago.

On Friday, June 28, Jada Green will get her chance to leave a mark in the 2024 Olympic Trials in the javelin throw starting at 5 p.m. MT. Romig will be back in action in the 400-meter hurdles at 7:16 p.m. MT. Jones and Hurta-Klecker will compete in the 1,500-meter semifinals at 6:53 p.m. MT.

Fans can watch live action on the NBC family of networks and stream it live on Peacock. For updated information, visit USATF.org.

As @buffgal noted, great day yesterday for Ms. Green, as in addition to making the final she had a nice PR (personal record) that increases her school record (if it's eligible)!

Dani Jones provided the other highlight as she survived a late stumble to advance to the finals of the 1500M as a time qualifier.

Best wishes to Abbey Glynn in today's 400M hurdle finals today!

Green's Record Javelin Throw Advances Her to Finals; Jones Moves Forward in 1,500m

By: Herman Shelton, Associate Director/Athletic Communications

EUGENE, Ore.
– Colorado's Jada Green set a school record with a 54.42m throw to advance to the finals in the javelin throw at the USA Olympic Track and Field Team Trials at Hayward Field on Friday, June 28.

Green began her day with a throw out of sector on her first attempt, but she rebounded with her best-ever throw on her second attempt, catapulting herself to fifth place. After three rounds, she finished in sixth and advanced to the finals.

Cole Romig's impressive season came to an end in the semifinals of the men's 400-meter hurdles, finishing 19th with a time of 51.22. Romig had a strong end to the season, running a personal best of 50.36 for a fourth-place finish at the Pac-12 Championship. That time qualified him for the NCAA West Regional and the Olympic Trials. Romig finished 19th in the NCAA semifinals. He enters next season as a senior and looks forward to bringing home a Big 12 individual championship.

The women's 1500m featured action-packed racing. CU alumnae Dani Jones and Sage Hurta-Klecker faced drama. Jones stumbled in the final 100m but maintained her balance to finish 11th with a time of 4:04.45, qualifying on time. Hurta-Klecker found herself battling for a spot in the finals, but could not overcome incidental contact, finishing with the 14th best time of 4:08.07, ending her Olympic journey.

Colorado's Abbey Glynn will be the lone Buffalo competing on Saturday, June 29, in the semifinals of the 400m hurdles at 6:41 p.m. MT.

Fans can watch live action on the NBC family of networks and stream it live on Peacock. For updated information, visit USATF.org.

And, nice post from National Champion and Olympic berth earner Valerie Constien -

Article after the U.S. Olympic Trials ended yesterday. Some nice performances overall throughout the Championships, with Valerie Constien the one Buff who will be heading off to Paris (on the track and field side), at least as part of the U.S. team - https://cubuffs.com/news/2024/6/30/...ecords-at-olympic-track-and-field-team-trials

(As noted in the below article, #ForeverBuff Eduardo (Lalo) Herrera won the Mexican 1500M Championships, but is having to wait to see if he's ranked high enough internationally to see if he'll be going to Paris. Also, per the 1st Instagram post by Coach L. Malone pasted below, incoming Buff Scottie Vines won the high jump competition in the U.S. Under 20 Championships, so has qualified for the U20 World Championships, which look to be scheduled to be held in Lima Peru from August 27-31.)

Buffs Battle and Break Records at Olympic Track and Field Team Trials

By: Herman Shelton, Associate Director/Athletic Communications

EUGENE, Ore.
– Colorado's Jada Green broke her school record for the second time in many days, concluding her season along with two fellow Buffs at the United States Track and Field Olympic Trials at Hayward Field.

Incoming freshman Scottie Vines' final competition did not go as planned, recording a no-height after failing to clear 2.16 meters. Vines had a senior year for the ages, winning the Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays, the USA U20 Championship, and the Nike Outdoor Championship. He jumped a personal best of 2.24 meters this season.

Graduating senior Jada Green needed just one more day to break the CU school record she set on Friday, June 28. Green finished seventh in the finals of the javelin throw with a toss of 54.80 meters.

Alumna Dani Jones finished ninth in the 1,500-meter run, ending her Olympic bid.

Outside the U.S., north of the border, Ella Baran competed in Canada in the 5,000-meter run, finishing third with a time of 15:36.25. Unfortunately, she did not meet the Olympic standard and will miss the games. Baran has exhausted her eligibility and will turn pro after a stellar collegiate career.

South of the border, former Buff Eduardo "Lalo" Herrera III won the 1,500m in the Mexican National Championships on Friday, June 29, with a time of 3:43. Herrera is awaiting world rankings to see if he will compete in Paris.

Over the pond, Colorado's Allie Routledge competed in the British Olympic Track and Field Trials in the high jump. She did not clear the opening height.

Stay tuned as Olympic teams from around the world are announced.
"

Probably the greatest track and field athlete in CU history (and one of its greatest in ANY sport) Jenny (Barringer) Simpson (also one of if not the greatest middle distance runners in U.S. history) announced a few days ago that today's New York Marathon is her final race as a pro. (Looks like the race recently started.)

Best wishes to her both today and beyond!

A nice 17th place finish in one of the world's major marathons a solid way to end Ms. Simpson's running career, along with it sounds like lots of love from the crowd..

Again, nothing but best wishes for her going forward!

_______________________________________________________________________________

And, BIG congrats are also in order to #ForeverBuff Sara Vaughn, who is the top U.S. women's finisher in 6th!
