It might seem obvious, but I appreciate the coaching staff remaining clear headed enough to take the safety at the end of the game.

10 years ago Dan Hawkins was beating Georgia in Athens. With about 2 minutes left, CU was beating Georgia 13 to 7. The team was gassed and backed up near the CU goalline with 4th down upcoming.

Hawkins had a chance to take a safety and kickoff with Mason Crosby... Forcing UGA to march the field to win. Instead, he decided to punt. UGA received the ball on the CU 43, and scored to take the lead, and ultimately win the game.

The situations arent identical, but they are examples of coaches making impactful decisions.

Props to Mac for taking the safety to win the game.

I thought the Stanford staff did a great job with that as well. Conventional practice would have been to take the time out immediately after 1st down. They allowed CU to back themselves to a point where they couldn't take more time off the clock on the 3d down plan. Those decisions basically made us leave time on the clock after taking the safety.

Our defense owned the game so I don't think it would have made a difference but we were helped by Stanford taking 2 time-outs earlier in the half.

M2 and staff didn't coach a dynamic game but they coached a game our players could and did win.

I think that if Lindsay had been able to go, HCMM would have trusted him to try to run the ball on 1st thru 3rd without fumbling to try to get the 1st down. The way it was played on that final series made me very, very nervous. We won, so it worked. No complaints.

I was wondering why they didnt run it up the gut a couple of times. They were running well.

I'm not sure. You may be right, but I would've questioned risking a fumble. That situation was textbook QB kneel and take a safety situation, something you learn and practice even in high school.

a dumb question...Why couldnt the Buffs take a knee on 4th down when Stanford had no timeouts left?

Because the clock stops on change of possession. Stanford would have the ball on the CU 2 yard line with 8 seconds left needing a TD to tie.

Honestly Ivbuff, I don't know what you know about the game. I wasn't trying to insult you if that's what you felt like. If u did, I apologize. In my crazy world, it's enjoy a win for a bit, then get back to work. Think of a staircase, we've made some steps up it, not satisfied though. It's a process like anything else. The great thing about football is, you have 10 guys to help with that and the rest of the team. Crappy way to explain it I know but that's the way I know it's done.
