And the schedule makers were not kind to the Buffs. We open with Wichita State on November 17th (5:30 pm mountain on ESPNU). Once we beat them, we get the winner of Alabama vs Maryland. Then we're going to have to (likely) beat either Temple or Purdue in the championship.

Good luck guys. Looks to be a fantastic game. Nice to see Tad play against his old team. Should be a fun match up.

reading the ESPN info, it is like they don't even realize the buffs are playing.

A Shocker fan! Welcome to the board first of all, but want to gie us an update on your team? Changes from last season's NIT Champs?

Rush the Court on Wichita State:

Wichita State: The Shockers were predicted to win the Valley last season, but came up just a bit short. This coming season, WSU will have lost some firepower, but will still have a lot in the stable with Toure’ Murry, Garrett Stutz and David Kyles anchoring the team. A team with five experienced seniors will lead the way for the Shockers which will help the eight newcomers to the program. They have also set up what appears to be a better schedule than last season including a game against UAB in the Intrust Bank Arena in downtown Wichita, home games with Utah State and UNLV, a game at Tulsa and the Puerto Rico Tip-Off that includes Purdue, Alabama, Colorado, Maryland and Temple. After having a suspect schedule last season and the few losses against their toughest competition, they can turn things around to get a few more key wins this year.

Shockers were a very balanced scoring team last year. Durley was the only scorer in double digits last year, but there were a lot of guys close who all return. Durley and Blair were their main guys for rebounds and they lose a ton there. We're going to have to play great defense and control the glass. No 2nd chance points.

tough draw because WSU is likely to be pretty good. i was hoping we'd get Turgeon and the Terps. we've seen his act before and he's beatable. payback, maybe.

That is BS... I was planning on a Temple draw.... that would be both of my schools.....

I was hoping for a UMD draw for first round. Being a supporter of both programs, and my parents are just as big of UMD supporters as my wife and I are of CU, I was thinking this would be a great family vacation.

Maryland wont be that good this year. They lost most of their good players, and with the loss of Jordan Williams, its going to be a tough year.

Hey guys, well this year is an odd year for WSU. It has every bit a feeling of the year we went to the sweet 16. We had come off a year where we were expected to dominate the Valley, be a shoe in for the tournament, and we came up short. That's sort of how last year went, we really underachieved during our non con schedule, and then just couldn't put away teams in conference at home, which is odd because we dominate at home. We sent Nebraska packing from the B12 with a double digit spanking, you guys can ask Doc how the atmosphere was :p. So that's another reason why it was odd. But anyway, we lost our entire starting front court, but have a good center stepping into that role, Garrett Stutz. He was a lightning rod for us during the NIT, he'd come off the bench and light it up. We picked up Carl Hall who will be our PF. He was a guy who played JUCO ball last year, and really turned it on during the post season tournament. Coach has already said that he can tell the difference between him and our true freshman recruits, he's a man, and its easy to tell with the physicality he plays with. So I want to say that the potential weakness of our team has been filled, its just that last year, we had depth at every position, and this year we will have to rely on our starters more.

We return all of our guards except Hatch who was the NIT MVP, but he was the 6th man, came in to light a fire under the guys. Also to point out, in the beginning of the season we were playing a first year guy at point, Joe Ragland. He was having a hard time transition into the role to run our offense, so we ended up splitting time at the point between him and Toure Murry who plays SG/SF sometimes. And it was just killing our tempo and cohesion. Ragland turned it on midway through the season, and really could see improvement in the NIT. Coach has said that this offseason he's understanding the offense completely, and now can be a vocal leader of the offense, which is a plus. We return David Kyles our SG, who has freakish athletic ability for his size, one of the best dunkers on our team, and has a silky smooth 3 from range, but is a bit inconsistent between games sometimes. Over all I think we will be better than I suspsect, and thats probably why we're getting some top 25 hype from around the bigger news sites. I think Rivals said we were 25, and Vitale said we were 31. So we're hovering right around that Top 25 mark preseason. I hope we can move up in that after this tournament. But I understand we have to move through you guys to do that, and that will be hard to do, but almost any game except for the WMU game would be hard with this field. Its an excellent tournament, and good luck to you guys. It should be really fun to watch, and fun for our players.

According to Mike DeCourcy, a foreign trip is a huge deal.

A random sample of 27 teams that took international tours between 2006 and 2010 shows they won, on average, two more games than in the season preceding the trip. Of those teams, 16 increased their victory totals, eight declined and three remained the same.

EDIT: Crap, I just realized that this is for tours against international teams, not tourneys like the Puerto Rico Tipoff. So feel free to ignore this.

You don't have to totally ignore it, but its not good news for you guys however. The Shox are currently down in Brazil playing a 5 game tour, we just played Palmeiras which is one of the best Pro teams down there, and today played the National Team. We lost both, but we got lots of good practice so far. Every player, even our true freshmen who a few should redshirt this year, have gotten minutes. We also got 10 extra practices at home out of it. So not to worry you guys too much, but you'll be playing a team who's already played 5 more games against pro teams, and 10 extra practices going into the tournament.

that's a nice trip for you guys. lots of experience heading into the Fall. nice work by your admins.

Thanks! I've been nothing but impressed by our AD and our staff in recent years. They're really elevating our program to new heights. We just have to finally pull up the boot straps and make it to the Dance a couple years in a row. Then we can hopefully be added to the ranks of teams in mid major conferences who aren't considered mid major teams.

A little interesting tid bit about the game yesterday against the National team, was that it was the last game and day before the final cuts. So we played against men on a mission to not get cut.

Honestly, Wichita State was the team I was least hoping to draw. Not only are they a tourney team this year (IMO), but they (unfairly) don't have the prestige that lesser teams in the tourney have. So if we lose to you guys, you'd better win the whole thing for us.

I'm surprised that teams are allowed to do this? It seems like a loophole to get around the no coached practice rule.

Hey Shocker,

Congrats on being in Perry Ellis' top 4. You guys have to be happy with that.

Thanks! Yeah I'm thrilled about it. Everything out on the internet, and even in an interview with Perry, he didn't mention WSU as a school in his final 4. So it was a real shock(no pun intended), that we were on his list. And especially odd that the list was released at around 11 pm on a thursday evening. I just about went to bed before the news was dropped. So I ended up going to bed a bit later after writing up an article and then spreading the word on Twitter.

(I also enjoyed rubbing it in on Duke fans).

I've said this before, but it bears repeating: Wichita State would be a great regular matchup to get going in the region. Easy travel and a game that is good for RPI, win or lose. Should be a packed house whether we're playing here or there. I really hope that it happens.

Ideally, I'd love to see a regional Christmas tournament in Denver every year that CU can host and bring in programs from outside our conference from border states. It's a tough time of year to schedule, so all the programs will usually have holes to fill. It's also a tough time to fill the arenas since the students are on break. I'd think that we could draw 5 teams a year from among WSU, Tulsa, KSU, Nebraska, UNM, NMSU, Weber State, Utah State, Northern Arizona, etc. and have something that was a good draw with a lot of fan support.

By George I have found a new best friend. That is one of the best ideas that I have heard in a long time. I have no reason why the administration wouldn't be willing to play you guys every year. That would be awesome to get started. Could create some fantastic rivalry moments in the future. I like this idea very much.
