Punt Returner

Looked at last years stats because I noticed Canty fielded the only punt from the scrimmage, and we had a total of 89 yards on punt returns last year. 89! Is that as abnormally low as it sounds or is that just me?

Anyway, anyone have an opinion on the punt returner? I wouldn't mind seeing Canty getting a shot, he's shown decent hands in the limited times he's been out there and he's quick. I'm not a fan of throwing Prich or other valuable WR due to potential injury. Could be a spot for Ford or Abron also.

For those who don't remember, Crawley was the primary PR last year.

I am surprised at the 89 yards. Mainly because I don't remember a 89 yard punt return, and it sure doesn't seem like we forced the teams we played into punting twice. :(

We didn't force too many punts last year, but when we did I was encouraged by Crawley in the role of returner. He was fearless.

Mosley. He won't be starting this year, so he isn't as valuable as others. Don't get me wrong he's still valuable to our future but he could do good this year.

^^This^^

But we should have been the best kick-off return team in the country considering all the live practice we got at it.

Trouble is that return teams are where teams highlight their athleticism and their depth, two areas were we fall woefully short. The action occurs in open field so speed and athleticism is highlighted and we lack both in the quantity that allows us to dedicate a number of quality non-starters to key roles.

I didn't realize we'd actually forced a team to punt last year.

Special teams is one of the places I'd like to see the most improvement. It sure wouldnt hurt to start drives on short fields for a change. Also backing up opponents inside the 20 more times than not would help the young D. I'd say it's long overdue to see solid special teams, CU used to always be strong, most of the time, in that area.

Catching punts is much different than catching kickoffs and in my experiences, there is only a few on any team that are capable of it, and it's not always the guys you'd guess it would be.

I would NOT be surprised to see Crawley and PRich give it some reps as well, in preparation for when we need a big play in a tight game.

Who has been fielding punts at practice? You are right, it's not for everybody, one of the harder things in football.

In my experience, it's exactly the same.

uld be.

When the Riddler was here and under JE this is somehow a true statement.:sad2::sad2:

That's what I get for posting while watching TV!

My point was that Espy was the only guy who could reliably catch a punt believe it or not!

My Senior year in high school, the head coach had a grand time at our banquet pointing out that I was the first punt returner in school history to average a NEGATIVE average for returns. It was sooooo funny!

Of course, he neglected to mention that for two years straight, every week in practice he'd group all the really fast dudes with me and we'd receive punts and try as he did, he never found anyone else he could rely on. So come Friday night, there I was, doing my best Espy impression (he had bigger guns, otherwise, pretty much twins).
