Ralphie - Great Escape(s)

OUBuff

American
This post got me thinking and remembering...

gng007, a Utes fan, put the following together on the Scout board:

For CO fans traveling to Utah . . .

Hello Buff fans. First, I just want to congratulate you on having the greatest mascot in college football. Ralphy blows my mind. Has he ever gone crazy and injured anyone?
.

I recall when I was a kid sitting in the South stands when Ralphie, at the conclusion of her run, bolted along the side of the trailer and escaped Folsom. My memory is of the scoreboard saying "Ralphie... Come Back." Honestly, I think it happened more than once.
This had to be in the late '70s early '80s, anybody else have that recollection? Is my memory failing?
I wrote a note to Dave Plati and asked him if he could go on the hunt for the incident(s), I will let you know if he replies. In the mean time, you old guys have to help me confirm or disprove my memory.

Your memory is perfect. I was there as well. If MY memory serves me, it was against Kansas. Ralphie got away from her handlers, ran up the ramp on the west side of the old team building, and was corralled behind before she could get anywhere. And, the scoreboard did, indeed, say Ralphie Come Back!!

Didn´t Ralphie V have a pretty crazy run at her debut in the spring game?

Yep - she was a little smaller then and she lost all of her handlers before calming standing in the corner

Good stuff, also liked the 'Ralphie Cam' from the USC game...

Brought up a question about my own memory - anyone remember what the game/team was that had a couple of players decide to play chicken with Ralphie when she rounded the corner? This was late 90's early 2000's, and as I recall ended the presence of the visiting team on the field when Ralphie runs. I want to say it was Kansas or KState, based on my hazy recollection of their uniforms.

I'm pretty sure it was OU and that moron Brian Bozworth

She was so fast. I still don't know how that one guy kept a handle on her. I don't want to know what would've happened if he didn't.

That's my boy Zeb. He's a freak athlete, also a pretty damn good softball shortstop. Ralphie handlers are considered letter winning athletes by the AD, and they work out with the strength and conditioning coach. They have some sort of lifting award that is given to the best pound for pound lifter, he won it one year, over every other male athlete at CU.

I went to high school with him and Cody, who was a Ralphie Handler as well (in fact he was the first one that fell off right out of the gates).. and yeah, he was a freak athlete in High school, not sure why he didn't get any love for football on the next level. That was pretty nuts at the spring game. Glad they didn't have any players out there that could have been hurt in a freak runaway Ralphie accident!

Not really an escape, but still:

My freshman year (I think, coulda been sophomore), camping out in the stadium to get tickets the next morning. Morning comes, and before they open the doors for us, they bring the entire team and Ralphie III (in her pen) onto the field for the team picture. All the team sets up to pose with Ralphie in the middle. Something spooks Ralphie, and she freaks out a little and bucks against the cage. The team scatters like roaches with the lights on. I watched either Darius Holland or Marcellous Elder sprint like a mutha****a, hurdle the railing, and get about 12 rows up into the stands before he stops and looks back.

Didn't stop laughing for about 20 minutes. It was awesome.

About 10 years ago my daughter, about 6 years old at the time, and I are at the kids day prior to the spring game. Ralphie was in her pen with a couple of runners close by for photo ops. There were signs around her pen warning people to not put their hands in or over the pen and the runners were still having to warn people. My daughter is next to the pen so I can take a picture when Ralphie actually walked right up next to her. Somewhere I have a great photo of my daughter and Ralphie nose to nose.

After I took the picture a student reached through the pen to pat Ralphie on the nose. Ralphie swung her head sideways and smashed the kid's hand against the pen; I'm fairly certain there were a few bones broken. My daughter looks at the college kid and says "that was dumb." The kid has tears running down his face and says "yes it was." One of the runners and I about busted a nut laughing.

Anyone remember this, it happened when I was a boy, in the Big 8 days.

While Ralphie was in his pen waiting to run, the Kansas Jayhawk mascot ran over to the pen and was shaking his big red tail feathers at her. The mascot moved away as the players came out and waited for the release of Ralphie. When the runners released Ralphie, she took a hard right turn and charged the Jayhawk mascot. The mascot had to dive over the field house fence rails to escape Ralphie.

That's what I remember too. I thought he jumped out of the way at the last second and that incident was whatade us change to coming out first. Interesting to see how many people have "memories" like this. I guess this is how legends start.
