The image of Ralphie is proudly displayed on the outside cover of the EXIS space weather instrument, one of the many sensors aboard the GOES-R, which launched successfully from Cape Canaveral, Fla., Saturday night.

Is "Allsome" a strong enough word for this?

I wonder what the function of that piece of metal is?? Given how every pound of payload costs a bajillion dollars to launch, there is no way NASA is footing the bill for some cu homers to put ralphie in space. @SpacemanSpiff Am I thinking about this right?

Edit. It looks totally bad ass!!

I don't know if most people remember, but Ellison Onizuka astronaut and CU alum, was on the Challenger. A satellite they were going to launch was emblazoned with a Buff logo.

It's a radiator for shedding heat IIRC. It was designed that way and qualified that way, so if down the line anybody had issues with it, they would have to pay for a new design to be re-qualified, thus it was able to stay. It's functional and beautiful.

Good question. You are correct that every pound of a spacecraft is scrutinized. I have no idea what it is. But I like it!
