Breaking down the craziest weekend of Big 12 college football yet

Colorado’s chances of playing for a Big 12 conference championship just went way up, with the upsets we saw around the Big 12 this weekend. Here’s a look around the Big 12, and the games that went down this last weekend:

Games:

Texas Tech @ #11 Iowa State:

This game was a phenomenal watch, as both teams had the lead late in the game. This game could’ve gone either way, but ultimately Texas Tech was able to pull off the upset, and knock-off this undefeated Iowa State team.

After this game Colorado fans may be asking: Does Texas Tech have a chance to beat us next week? My answer would be of course they have a chance, but I think that Colorado should remain the favorite in that game. This game to me was more indicative of Iowa State being overrated, not so much Texas Tech being underrated. The Buffs will have a chance to rest up on the bye, and come to Texas next week rested and healthy.

#17 Kansas State @ Houston:

This game was a great watch as well, with Houston ultimately overcoming a nine point deficit in the fourth quarter and pulling off the upset. This Houston team has been figuring it out as the season has gone on, and gave Kansas State all that they could handle. The key to this game for Houston was shutting down DJ Giddens, the same running back who nearly had 200 yards against the Buffs. Once Giddens was bottled up, Houston knew they could force Avery Johnson into mistakes, and they finished with two interceptions on the day.

This game was a good showing from Houston and proved that they will be a tough Big 12 team to play down the stretch. Kansas State dropped down to 22 in the AP Poll, but will have ample opportunity to prove themselves with three games still to go.

Arizona @ UCF:

Neither of these teams have a real chance to compete for the Big 12 title, but it’s still an important game for both teams as they needed to win in order to keep their bowl hopes alive. UCF has looked like the better team this season, and they proved that on Saturday. The Knights 56-12 win told us that Arizona is every bit as bad as they have looked these last few weeks, and Wildcat fans will need to start looking forward to next year. It’s a shame to see Arizona not be able to put a good roster around McMillan in his final year before inevitably being a first round pick in the upcoming draft.

TCU @ Baylor:

Baylor was able to win their third straight game against TCU, and it looks like Baylor will be going bowling with five wins and three games still left to go. Earlier this season Sawyer Robertson became the starting quarter back for the Bears after an injury to Dequan Finn, and Baylor hasn’t looked back. Robertson is a legitimate quarter back that will be able to hold his own in the Big 12, and Baylor may have some hopes of winning the Big 12 next year with Robertson at the helm.

Arizona State @ Oklahoma State:

It’s looking like Oklahoma State will not be able to get things going this year as they’re now 0-6 in conference play. Arizona State won this game 42-21 and will be going bowling as they move to 6-2 on the year. Arizona State has played tough competition this season, and has held their ground in every game they’ve played in. This is a good football team who can beat just about anybody in the Big 12 on the right day.

Updated Big 12 Standings:

The Buffaloes desperately needed Kansas State and Iowa State to lose one of their next few games, and they got their wish this week with both of these Big 12 contenders losing. The Buffaloes moved into third place in the conference after these five games, and here’s a complete look at the new Big 12 standings:

After a weekend of upsets, the Buffaloes are in the drivers seat now in this conference. If the Buffaloes are able to win their last four games, they should be the team to play BYU in Dallas on December 7th for the conference championship. (Iowa State is currently ahead of them based on overall record, but the Buffs would gain the tiebreaker by beating Texas Tech, the team that beat Iowa State.)

The Buffs will need to take it one game at a time and handle their business before we start booking tickets at AT&T Stadium. Tune into the Buffs next game at Texas Tech next Saturday, where Big Noon Kickoff will be in town for what will be a huge Big 12 matchup for the Buffs.
