Welcome to silly season.

A newsy week in Boulder continued on Saturday night, when Buffs center Van Wells announced he’ll be leaving CU’s football team and entering the transfer portal. Wells, who started most of this season’s games at center for the Buffs, announced the news through a released statement on social media:

“I want to say thank you to all the coaches who gave me the opportunity to play here at CU, it says. “I appreciate all the love and support I received these past 2 years from the CU staff and most importantly the CU fanbase. The relationships I’ve built here will always be cherished. Thank you for the brotherhood we created and you guys will truly be missed.”

Wells, a sophomore who was recruited out of Houston, Texas, was one of the nine remaining players who stayed at Colorado when Coach Prime arrived last year. He’s the second Buffs offensive lineman to leave the program this offseason — left tackle Gerad Christian-Lichtenhan also recently announced his departure as well.

Wells appeared in 11 of the Buffs’ 12 games at center this year, and had generally played well through his first two seasons in Boulder. But the line as a whole was historically bad, and widespread changes were imminent. He’ll look to find a new school to finish his final two seasons of eligibility, while Coach Prime and the rest of the Buffs staff will now look at replacing two major contributors on their line.

With the transfer portal officially opening on Monday, there figures to be plenty of move regarding player movement. You can follow along with our coverage right here.
