Tad Boyle will be the head coach of Team USA.

After a week of tryouts, incoming five-star freshman Cody Williams has been named to the official roster for the upcoming U19 FIBA World Cup.

The Americans will be in Debrecen, Hungary from June 24 to July 2. They will be in Group B and will face Madagascar, Slovenia and Lebanon in the qualifying round, then will presumably advance into the knockout stages to face challengers such as Spain, France and Serbia.

Team USA won the last U19 World Cup when Chet Holmgren and Kenneth Lofton Jr. outdueled Victor Wembanyama in Riga. This team will be expected to win again, as many players return from the U18 squad that won the 2022 Americas Championship.

That U18 team was coached by Tad Boyle, who will also be leading Team USA in Hungary. The Buffs’ all-time winningest basketball coach has worked with the national team since 2013 and was previously an assistant under John Calipari at the 2017 U19 World Cup in Egypt. Not only does he get a head start working with Williams, but his Team USA connections boost his recruiting profile for later down the road.

Boyle and Williams will a star studded roster that also includes: Mark Armstrong (Villanova), Tobe Awaka (Tennessee), Omaha Biliew (Iowa State), Kylan Boswell (Arizona), Myles Colvin (Purdue), Eric Dailey Jr. (Oklahoma State), Dylan Harper (#2 in 2024 HS class), Ian Jackson (#5 in ‘24), Tre Johnson (#1 in ‘24), Ven-Allen Lubin (Notre Dame) and Asa Newell (#9).

If you’re taking notes, that is a lot of guards and not that many forwards. The biggest player on the roster is Awaka, who is built like Vols legends Grant Williams and Admiral Schofield at 6’8, 250-lbs. Otherwise the Americans will probably be playing small with Cody at the 3 or even the 4 despite being projected as the starting 2-guard in Boyle’s Colorado roster.
