Team Colorado will begin their title pursuit tonight.

Team Colorado is back at The Tournament (TBT) and will play the Men of Mackey in Dayton, Ohio at 1:00 p.m. (MT). All games will be televised on ESPN platforms.

If you’re unfamiliar with TBT, it’s a single-elimination, open-entry tournament with a grand prize of $2 million. Team Colorado was an early powerhouse and nearly won the grad prize in 2016, but their aging roster fell off while the competition added more and more talent.

Team Colorado were previously led by alumni from the days of Ricardo Patton and Jeff Bzdelik, such as Marcus Hall and Marcus Relphorde. Now the Buffs will be represented by fan favorites from the Tad Boyle era.

Leading the team will be Evan Battey, who needs no introduction. The Mayor of Boulder has been back home training with the team while on holiday from his Bulgarian club Rilski Sportist. He will be the unquestioned leader of this team.

Joining him will be Colorado teammates George King, D’Shawn Schwartz, Tyler Bey, Dallas Walton, Dominique Collier, Shane Gatling and Jeriah Horne. Other Buffs who played earlier in the Tad-era will be Xavier Johnson and Tre’Shaun Fletcher, while all-time leading scorer Richard Roby and Shannin Sharpe will represent the Patton/Bzdelik days.

The coaching staff is led by Zach Rubesam, the current director of playing development at CU. David Pavlakovich, Dominique Coleman and Tory Stewart-Miller will assist him, while Remi Marder and former walk-on Josh Repine work behind the scenes as GMs.

If you’re paying attention to the roster, it’s a bit of a weird mix of guys, especially if you look at the positions listed on TBT’s website where George King is listed as a point guard.

I would guess that they’re going to run out some massive lineups with one of the forwards being the de facto point guard — something like Fletcher at the 1, Schwartz and King on the wing, then Horne and Battey as the bigs. Collier and Gatling will be needed for shooting (and Sharpe for layup line dunks), but everyone else on the roster is 6’6 or taller and they all have legit skill as shooters and passers.

If Team Colorado beats the Purdue alumni today — not exactly a given, even if Robbie Hummel is 34-years-old and has reconstructed knees — they will advance to face the Friday Beers (FKA Armored Athlete) or Athletics Miami in a Round of 32 game that will tip off at 4:00 p.m. (MT) on Friday.
