Buffs fail to crack the 20-point mark again this season

Damien Martinez rushed for a career-high 178 yards along with three touchdowns as Oregon State beat Colorado 42-9 on Saturday night.

The Beavers (6-2, 3-2 Pac-12) become bowl eligible in consecutive seasons. A nine-year span since accomplishing the feat and first time under coach Jonathan Smith. OSU held Colorado under double-digits with a solid defensive performance. The first time they’ve held a Pac-12 under ten points since 2012.

The Buffs (1-6, 1-3 Pac-12) hit the road for the first time with interim coach Mike Sanford after an overtime win over Cal at home last week. Not the result they were hoping for with the least amount of points in Pac-12 play so far this season. CU has yet to accumulate 100 points which is the worst total of any FBS team in 2022.

Martinez got his first score midway through the first quarter from four yards out to give the Beavers the early lead. A 16-yard pass from Ben Gulbranson to Silas Bolden gave OSU a two-score advantage at 14-0 with 13:30 to go in the second quarter. Colorado finally got on the scoreboard with a 44-yard field goal from Cole Becker on the next drive.

All prior to Martinez’s second touchdown run from three yards away to cap off a 5-play, 55-yard drive before halftime. Colorado went into the locker room facing a 18-point deficit, but there was no comeback to be had against the Beavers.

Gulbranson stepped into his third career start in place of Chance Nolan, and thrived with a 60-yard TD pass to Jack Velling to open the second half. The three-year freshman went 14-of-22 for 202 yards and two touchdowns.

J.T. Shrout started in place of Owen McCown and failed to guide CU’s offense with any sort of urgency in several regards. The Tennessee transfer out did Gulbranson with a total of 206 yards but threw no touchdowns and two interceptions on the night.

CU’s lone touchdown came late in the third quarter with a 1-yard run from Jayle Stacks to finish off a 9-play, 80-yard drive. The first career score for the former Cherry Creek HS product came in his fifth game of the season. Stacks finished with eight carries and 50 yards out of the backfield. The Buffs offense generated 290 total yards.

UP NEXT:

Colorado comes home to host Arizona State next Saturday. The Sun Devils are 1-5 since a season opening win over Northern Arizona.
