The Buffaloes defend the Centennial Cup and move to 2-1
Colorado traveled up to Fort Collins to face off against Colorado State in the Rocky Mountain Showdown tonight and showed out. This game had a 7.5-point spread coming in, but Colorado knew that they needed to make a statement. Make a statement they did. Here’s how the game went for the Buffs:
1st Quarter:
In the first quarter, Colorado State was able to control the pace of the game. Their defense forced punts, and their offense moved the ball into scoring position but had to settle for a field goal. The Buffaloes weren’t able to get anything going but did have some early success in the run game.
2nd Quarter:
Colorado found their footing in the second quarter with the passing attack taking off. LaJohntay Wester had two touchdowns and helped Colorado capture the momentum of the game. The Buffs’ defense established that they’re able to play a complete game, as they were able to shut out Colorado State and kept the Buffs rolling, leading 14-3 going into halftime.
3rd Quarter:
In the third quarter, Travis Hunter dominated. He had a touchdown reception and snagged an interception on the very next possession. Colorado State began to unravel as penalties piled up, and offensive miscommunications haunted the Rams. The Buffaloes’ defense pitched another shutout in the third quarter, and the Buffs went into the fourth quarter up by 21 points.
4th Quarter:
In the fourth quarter, the game began to get out of hand, with Travis Hunter pulling in his second touchdown of the game early in the quarter. Travis never left the game despite the Buffs being up four possessions, and Colorado never let up. Even when they could have kneeled the ball to end the game, Shedeur was dropping back and looking to throw. It’s clear that Colorado made this game personal, as they looked to not just win but crush the Rams. The final score was 28-9, and there were almost more points put on the board late in the game.
Colorado’s passing game was on fire once again, led by LaJohntay Wester and Travis Hunter. There was a noticeable improvement in Colorado’s offensive line in both the rushing and passing games. Shedeur had much more time to throw, and CSU had no answer for the speed of Colorado’s deep passing attack. The defense stepped up as well forcing turnovers, and only allowing nine points on the night. This was the performance Colorado needed after losing in humiliating fashion last week against Nebraska.
After moving to 2-1, Colorado has a lot to look forward to for the rest of the season. Saturday night was proof that this roster still has potential and proved to us that they are able to adapt and overcome adversity. Getting a big win against a rival and keeping the stars healthy will set up Colorado to have a big week again next week. Colorado will be back in action next Saturday at home against Baylor for their first conference matchup in the Big 12.
