Buffs will likely be winless going into the Pac-12 schedule

The Colorado Buffaloes (0-1, Pac-12) will be heavy underdogs again in Week 2.

After suffering a season-opening loss vs. TCU on Friday night, Karl Dorrell’s team heads to Colorado Springs to face Air Force as 14-and-a-half point underdogs. The Falcons (1-0, MWC) are coming off a 48-17 win over Northern Iowa on Saturday.

A lot of history between CU and the Academy goes back to 1958. The Buffs hold a 12-5 advantage over the Falcons despite losing the previous meeting in 2019— an overtime battle with AFA claiming a 30-23 victory in Boulder. This will be a rare trip for the Buffaloes as they’ll head south on I-25 for the first time in 48 years.

The back end of a home-and-home agreement puts CU near the Garden of the Gods for the seventh time in school history. They’ve posted a 5-1 record previously with the lone road defeat in the series coming in 1963.

Troy Calhoun enters his 16th season as head coach for Air Force. The former NFL assistant has finally found his way at the Academy with a 10-3 record in 2021. What doesn’t show up on paper is that all three losses came by six points or fewer. A stout Falcons team from last year will transition into a more experienced group with 11 full-time starters returning (6 offense, 5 defense) this year.

The Falcons’ triple option led the nation in rushing yards in 2021 and they face a Colorado defense that allowed more than 200 rushing yards in the second half to TCU. Calhoun will look to run early and often, take shots down the field when CU is on the front front, and control the clock if necessary.

For the Buffs to compete in this game, the defense will have stay disciplined with their assignments, and the offense will have to produce at least something positive.
