Three of the best so far in spring practices.

Since Coach Prime decided to make Colorado Buffaloes players earn their numbers, a select few have stepped up and shined over the course of spring practices. As expected, not everyone will be on the roster come late August, but here are a few in the early going with rising stock.

Jimmy Horn Jr.

The USF transfer is showing out for the Buffs staff and fitting into his role with ease. As a former first-team All-AAC selection for the Bulls, Horn had 37 catches for 551 yards and five total touchdowns in 2022. He’ll be one of the most interesting to watch considering he has made a splash thus far and wil be called upon as an every down receiver for Shedeur Sanders. Horn also appears to have developed a deep understanding of Sean Lewis’ offensive scheme, setting the bar high for his teammates. He’ll wear No. 5 in 2023.

Shane Cokes

Big zero at Dartmouth will now be known as ‘Agent 99’. The All-Ivy League transfer to Colorado has been a beast in practice sessions and earned his right to be the highest number on the field. Great news for a defensive line that has needed a boost for upwards of a decade. It appears Cokes is putting his talents on display over and over again to the amazement of his new coaches.

“He’ll do whatever you ask him to do and that’s what we need,” Coach Nick Williams told the Denver Gazette about Cokes. “He’s a good kid, smart. He plays hard, he’s a team guy. He’s a leader and we’re glad he’s here.”

Travis Hunter

The two-way talent will secure No. 12 on the roster as one of the best overall athletes. When Prime announced he would be leaving behind Jackson State for good, one of his original recruits was not far behind him. Hunter is expected to play on both sides of the ball with an emphasis in the secondary. They’re running a hybrid look on defense which has not been seen prior to this year, according to one of the CU players. Hunter is a production machine with NFL aspirations ready to be taken to the next level in Boulder.
