The Buffs just found a plug-and-play safety.

Going into this offseason, the Buffs’ main goal was to fill one position in particular through the transfer portal: safety.

With Cam’Ron Silmon-Craig and Shilo Sanders out of eligibility, Deion Sanders and co. knew they needed to bring in a group of new ballhawks to command the defensive backfield. Thankfully, Prime did just that, bringing in Tawfiq Byard from South Florida to help plug that hole.

BREAKING: USF transfer Safety Tawfiq Byard has Committed to Colorado, he tells @on3sports

Byard comes to Boulder with three years of eligibility remaining. After redshirting in 2023 with the Bulls, Byard broke out in 2024, recording 54 total tackles, 34 of which were solo tackles, 8.5 TFLs, two sacks, a pick and a fumble recovery.

Byard’s 6-foot-1, 200-pound frame makes him a prime candidate to fill in for Cam’Ron Silmon-Craig at strong safety following the NFL draft this spring. Byard has the size and speed to come down and lay the boom, along with the natural ball-hawking skills required of safeties when dropped back into coverage.

With Byard now on the roster, the Buffaloes have landed a plug-and-play safety that will make an immediate impact in 2025.

Welcome to Boulder, Tawfiq!
