Colorado will get some key pieces back against the Knights

Luckily for Colorado fans, the Buffaloes are heading into UCF’s Bounce House this afternoon as a relatively healthy team. After two weeks of missing three starters, the Buffs are getting a couple of them back for week five.

Running back Dallan Hayden will make his return to the backfield against the Knights. Hayden suffered a high-ankle sprain against Nebraska in week two, missing two weeks of action to heal up and recuperate. Hayden is the best and most experienced running back on Colorado’s roster, so his return is a welcome one. Expect Hayden and Micah Welch to split carries today in Orlando.

Defensive tackle Chidozie Nwankwo will return for week five. Much like Hayden, Nwankwo suffered a foot injury against Nebraska. The Houston transfer is a pivotal piece of Colorado’s run defense, so having him back will be a huge boost, especially against a run-heavy team like UCF.

Linebackers Trevor Woods and Jeremiah Brown didn’t make the trip to Orlando with the team, as reported by the Daily Camera’s Brian Howell. No reason was given as to why Woods and Brown are absent, but based on the timing, there’s a good chance they’ve decided to utilize a redshirt and transfer out of Boulder after the 2024 season.

Other absences of not include offensive lineman Kahlil Benson and defensive end Dayon Hayes. Benson has been a mainstay on Colorado’s offensive line this season, but Kareem Harden will step in and start for him in his place. BJ Green and Samuel Okunlola will likely start at defensive end in Hayes’ absence. It’s unclear as to why Benson and Hayes aren’t playing.

Safety Shilo Sanders won’t return against UCF, but his healing is progressing after undergoing surgery to repair a broken forearm after the Nebraska game. Sanders was estimated to miss 2 to 3 weeks after his surgery, and this will mark his third week on the sidelines. With Colorado having a bye next week, Deion and Colorado’s staff will give Sanders the week off so he has an extra two weeks to heal. As of now, it sounds like there’s a good chance that Sanders will return when the Buffs play K-State at Folsom Field on October 12.

Orlando is currently getting slammed by rain, so kickoff has been delayed to 2:20 pm MT. That time may still be pushed back further depending on the weather.
