NCAA Basketball: Colorado at Tennessee

Steve Roberts-USA TODAY Sports

The Buffs took down the Vols.

Sophomore guard KJ Simpson’s explosive performance in the Buffs win over #11 ranked Tennessee earned him Pac-12 Player of the Week honors. Simpson dominated the court with his first career double-double with 23 points and 10 rebounds against the Volunteers, helping Colorado upset the well-known Tennessee program.

Simpson was named Pac-12 Freshman of the Week twice during his freshman season, once on November 29, 2021 and another February 21, 2022. He also finished his freshman year with All-Pac-12 Freshman Team Honors.

Simpson has proven to be one of the best underclassmen guards in school history, and likely the best since McKinley Wright IV, who graduated in 2021 and is now playing for the Dallas Mavericks in the NBA.

The early season upset of Tennessee has proven that the Buffs are a legitimate competitor for the remainder of the season. Simpson’s early success could potentially carry through the season, and this early honor could prove his importance to the team.
