Welcome to our official countdown until football season! There’s only a few weeks left until the Colorado Buffaloes kick off the 2024 campaign against the North Dakota State Bison at Folsom Field on August 29th, so we at Ralphie Report are going to celebrate the only way we know how: with some power rankings! Over the next 20 days, we’ll rank the 20 most important players for the Colorado Buffaloes ahead of the 2024 season.
Coach Prime spent the offseason plundering the transfer portal to revamp Colorado’s defensive line. Despite the riches Deion brought to the Buffaloes, returning DT Amari McNeill is slated to play a pivotal role in Colorado’s trenches.
McNeill came to the Buffs from Tennessee ahead of the 2023 season, where he played in six games with the Vols in two seasons. As a redshirt sophomore on a heavily senior-led defensive line last season, McNeill showed some serious promise, tallying three sacks, seven tackles for loss, a pass breakup, and a QB hurry.
While McNeill’s role in 2023 was limited, he’ll play an important part in Colorado's pass rush this season. While the Buffs bulked up on the edge with guys like BJ Green and Dayon Hayes, Colorado’s interior defensive line is still relatively unproven. Along with Shane Cokes, McNeill will need to act as an elder statesman to the group, showing them what it takes to succeed in Boulder.
McNeill will be fighting for a starting role with Cokes and Ohio transfer Rayyan Buell, but he’s shown he can be a homewrecker. Even if he doesn’t crack the starting lineup, having a versatile young interior defensive lineman will help the team tremendously. With two years to play two, McNeill has the potential to emerge as one of Colorado’s most important pieces in the trenches.
