Benson plays a pivotal role in the new offensive line's success
Welcome to our official countdown until football season! There’s only a few weeks left until the Colorado Buffaloes kick off the 2024 campaign against the North Dakota State Bison at Folsom Field on August 29th, so we at Ralphie Report are going to celebrate the only way we know how: with some power rankings! Over the next 20 days, we’ll rank the 20 most important players for the Colorado Buffaloes ahead of the 2024 season.
Continuing yesterday’s theme of offensive linemen, we’ve got another one on deck for today’s rankings. For #17, we have junior offensive tackle Kahlil Benson.
Benson comes to the Buffs from the University of Indiana, where he started all 12 games for the Hoosiers at right tackle last season. In 2023, the 6-6, 305 lbs tackle only allowed one sack on 424 pass attempts. That’s as good as it gets in terms of pass protection, especially considering how stacked the Big Ten East was last season with teams like Ohio State, Penn State, and Michigan all finishing in the Top 15.
The four-star transfer and 12th-best offensive lineman in this offseason’s portal cycle (according to 247) is a massive addition to the team, literally. His huge size is a tremendous asset to the unit as a whole, as well as his well-established resume of elite pass-blocking. Keeping Shedeur Sanders upright and healthy is of utmost importance this season and Benson’s success on the line is one of the biggest factors deciding that.
Along with Justin Mayers and Tyler Brown, Benson will need to step into a leadership role to ensure that the line as a whole is doing enough to accomplish Colorado’s offensive goals. Benson is the only player on Colorado’s new line to have experience playing in a power conference, so his expertise will be invaluable to the other players in the trenches. The Buffs will need to keep Shedeur safe and establish a run game to survive and thrive in the Big 12, and a lot of that rests on the shoulders of the offensive line and Benson.
