The MLB was a huge part of last year and is a leader this year
Welcome to our official countdown until football season! There’s only a few weeks left until the Colorado Buffaloes kick off the 2024 campaign against the North Dakota State Bison at Folsom Field on August 29th, so we at Ralphie Report are going to celebrate the only way we know how: with some power rankings! Over the next 20 days, we’ll rank the 20 most important players for the Colorado Buffaloes ahead of the 2024 season.
Last year, the Buffs rebuilt every single position. One of the biggest and most impressive on the defensive side of the ball was a Clemson linebacker. When LaVonta Bentley committed to the Buffs, it was an affirmative vote that this is now a serious football team. He came here! From Clemson! And he played! We were 1-11 in 2022! Anyways, long story short, Bentley came in and he played a bunch. He and JuJu Mitchell patrolled the middle of the field. Bentley was the one constant in the middle of the field. Throughout the year, he found his niche as a run-stopper and a consistent presence on tight ends. Bentley really steadied the ship on an up-and-down 2023 defense.
Now, in 2024, the defense HAS to take a big step forward. As one of the starting linebackers and a captain of the defense, LaVonta has to be a huge part of the step forward. He is going to make a lot of the defensive calls on the field and given Colorado’s atrocious run defense last year, Bentley will have to get washed out less this year.
Why is he so important? The middle linebacker spot is one of the few positions that should have the same starters year-over-year. LaVonta Bentley, as one of the de factor defensive captains, is in a rare position of providing continuity in a team with precious little holdover from last year. He needs to step up and star in his role (to bring back a Mike MacIntyre classic) for this team to be stronger against the run this year. CU will not win more than 5 or 6 games if they can’t stop the run. Bentley needs to lay the wood.
