The dynamic freshman needs to show up this fall
Welcome to our official countdown until football season! There are only 23 days left until the Colorado Buffaloes kick off the 2024 campaign against the North Dakota State Bison at Folsom Field on August 29th, so we at Ralphie Report are going to celebrate the only way we know how: with some power rankings! Over the next 20 days, we’ll rank the 20 most important players for the Colorado Buffaloes ahead of the 2024 season.
Drelon Miller is the youngest Buff in the countdown, but he brings up strong echoes of the past at CU. The athlete from Texas is an all-around offensive weapon who had many suitors in his senior year. He was one of the best players to come out of the Lone Star State last year, with time on both sides of the ball, running back and wide receiver. Long story short, Drelon MIller is a football player. And he’s ready to contribute now.
Miller is a dangerous player with the ball in his hands, who combines balance power and quickness to run around and through people. The obvious comparison for Buff fans to make is Laviska Shenault, who touched the ball only a few times his freshman year. One of them was a touchhdown. HOWEVER, I’m nothing if not contrarian. I don’t think that Shenault is the best comparison. I think Mike Pritchard might be a better comparison. Drelon is a stockier sort than Shenault, and he fits Pritchard’s running style well. Drelon has great agility and gets in and out of cuts FAST, which is separate from Shenault’s straight line speed and power.
Miller is a unique offensive weapon. In the Big 12, teams have athletes, but Drelon has the ability to be a true difference-maker. It is Pat Shurmur’s job to get the ball in his hands in unique ways, but if he does, CU has a differentiator. In a deep league like the Big 12, every competitive advantage matters.
A lot of the names on this list directly address problems on last year’s team or the real block and tackle parts of football. Drelon Miller is different. He is purely additive. He is the third heat. If he can break out for the Buffs this year, it gives them another name alongside Travis Hunter who is just simply special. That matters if you want to win games.
