2023’s breakout safety can play more freely in the secondary this season

Welcome to our official countdown until football season! There are only 23 days left until the Buffs kick off the 2024 campaign against the North Dakota State Bison at Folsom Field on August 29th, so we at Ralphie Report are going to celebrate the only way we know how: with some power rankings! Over the next 20 days, we’ll rank the 20 most important players for the Colorado Buffaloes ahead of the 2024 season.

Starting the rankings with #20, we’ve got senior safety Cam’Rom Silmon-Craig.

Silmon-Craig was part of the so-called “Louis” Coach Prime brought from Jackson State to Boulder in 2023. During his two seasons with the Tigers under Prime, Silmon-Craig played in 25 games, coming away with five picks, 11 pass breakups, two fumble recoveries, and one forced fumble.

After jumping from FCS Jackson State to a power conference with the Buffs last season, he continued his tear, coming away with three INTs, which tied for the team best with Travis Hunter. Along with those interceptions, Silmon-Craig totaled 44 tackles last season, 32 of which were unassisted, and a sack.

Silmon-Craig was perhaps Colorado’s most unsung hero on the defense side of the ball in 2023. When injuries started to hit Colorado’s secondary like a truck in the latter half of the season, Silmon-Craig’s presence in the defensive backfield was one of the few constants that kept the Buffs’ pass coverage from falling apart.

With new defensive coordinator Robert Livingston in town, Silmon-Craig’s role as a safety will expand in 2024. Livingston’s 4-3 scheme will have the Buffs playing primarily Cover 3, with the safeties playing much higher than last season. He’ll no longer have to watch the mesh and try to prevent the run as often as in 2023, giving him free rein to hawk for picks when QBs test his side of the field.

Silmon-Craig has already established that he has a knack for picking off the football. That combined with the newfound freedom given to the safeties by Livingston, don’t be surprised if his interception numbers soar even higher. If Silmon-Craig picks up right where he left off last year, the Buffs could have one of the sneaky best safety rooms in the country.

Make sure to come back tomorrow to see who we’ve ranked #19 on our list! This is gonna be fun!
