Nwankwo is going to make or break Colorado’s defensive line
Welcome to our official countdown until football season! There are only two days (!!!) left until the Colorado Buffaloes kick off the 2024 campaign against the North Dakota State Bison at Folsom Field on August 29th, so we at Ralphie Report are going to celebrate the only way we know how: with some power rankings! Over the next 20 days, we’ll rank the 20 most important players for the Colorado Buffaloes ahead of the 2024 season.
We’ve talked A LOT about Colorado’s new and improved defensive line on this list. Dayon Hayes and BJ Green are surefire bets to cause chaos off the edge, but Colorado’s defensive line will live or die by its tackles.
Last year, the Buffs couldn’t contain the run, which played a huge role in their six-game skid to end 2023. After losing nearly their entire line to the transfer portal or NFL Draft, Deion Sanders hit the portal to patch up the d-line. Luckily for Deion, he struck gold by landing Houston transfer Chidozie Nwankwo.
Nwankwo comes to Boulder with three total seasons and a year of Big 12 experience under his belt with Houston. While with the Coogs, he started 33 games, tallying 94 tackles, four sacks, and a blocked kick. Nwankwo earned the nickname “the block bully” with Houston, which you don’t get for no reason.
The 5-11, 290 lbs DT has a knack for pushing around offensive linemen and specializes in wrapping up runningbacks as soon as they hit the line of scrimmage. He’s established a pedigree of clogging up gaps and stopping the run while at Houston, which is exactly what the Buffs need.
Robert Livingston and Colorado’s defensive staff are placing an immense amount of trust in Nwankwo to patch up last season’s leaky run defense, which is why he ranks so highly on this list. It doesn’t matter if you have one of the better secondaries in the country if teams are rushing for 200 yards per game against you. If Nwankwo can step up and stop the run, the Buffs are in a great spot. If not, they’re in big trouble.
