A well-rounded defensive end

Welcome to our official countdown until football season! There’s only a few weeks left until the Colorado Buffaloes kick off the 2024 campaign against the North Dakota State Bison at Folsom Field on August 29th, so we at Ralphie Report are going to celebrate the only way we know how: with some power rankings! Over the next 20 days, we’ll rank the 20 most important players for the Colorado Buffaloes ahead of the 2024 season.

Anyone who watched any of the Buffs last year knows that the lines were the problem. The offensive line gets a lot of the credit (or blame) for the 4-8 record (which was insanely impressive, as many people forget), but the defensive line also didn’t hold up throughout the season. The defense gave up more than 170 rushing yards per game, which is a difference of more than a 100 when you see that the Buffs rushed for less than 70 per game.

Long story short, the front 7 has to get better. And it has! There will be one defensive line holdover next year (Shane Cokes), which hopefully means improvement. One of the surest bets on improvement is BJ Green. Yes, that is the current Power 5 leader in QB pressures, BJ Green. He is a senior with nothing to prove, but he wants to make it to the NFL.

Green is a stout end who can move inside if needed. BJ doesn’t have the prototypical height, but he has a bevy of moves that lets him get to the quarterback fast. Like, 8.5 sacks in the last two years fast. He has power and experience. He is also the most high-profile player in the front 7 for the Buffaloes in 2024. The Buffs are a team that will rely on star power as long as Coach Prime is here. BJ Green is that star. Even if he doesn’t get all the way to the QB, he will need to change a lot of plays this year for the Buffs to be successful.
