The Buffs need someone next to Travis Hunter

Welcome to our official countdown until football season! There’s only a few weeks left until the Colorado Buffaloes kick off the 2024 campaign against the North Dakota State Bison at Folsom Field on August 29th, so we at Ralphie Report are going to celebrate the only way we know how: with some power rankings! Over the next 20 days, we’ll rank the 20 most important players for the Colorado Buffaloes ahead of the 2024 season.

As the year progressed, the Colorado Buffaloes secondary just couldn’t hold up as a unit. Travis Hunter remains an unequaled individual talent, but the guys around him couldn’t withstand the depth hits that come with playing a full college football season. Combining that with some key departures in the offseason (we’ll miss you, Roderick Ward) meant that Coach Prime had to go hand pick his CB replacements. Enter Preston Hodge.

Hodge was one of the best cornerbacks anywhere in the country. At Liberty last year, he took on the hardest assignment and won. Consistently. He only had two picks, but that is because people stopped throwing his side of the field. In the transfer portal, he was one of the most complete defensive backs available. Hodge can play inside, outside and a little bit of safety and he competes on the ball with the best of them. When you only have one more year of Travis Hunter, you need to maximize that year. Hodge is an experienced operator that can slide next to Hunter and complete his assignment. The more people around Travis that take and win matchups, the more he is able to make outstanding plays.

Why is Hodge so important? he is one of the few plus players that CU can reliably count on before the season starts. We know that Hodge is someone that is a plus player in any conference he’s in. Pure talent wise, he absolutely belongs on an all-conference team in the Big 12. Knowing that CU has little continuity to fall back on, the talent advantage will have to make an outsized impact on this year’s prospects. Hodge is one of those players that provides that advantage.
