Shilo will get to hawk for turnovers in 2024

Welcome to our official countdown until football season! There’s only a few weeks left until the Colorado Buffaloes kick off the 2024 campaign against the North Dakota State Bison at Folsom Field on August 29th, so we at Ralphie Report are going to celebrate the only way we know how: with some power rankings! Over the next 20 days, we’ll rank the 20 most important players for the Colorado Buffaloes ahead of the 2024 season.

As one of Colorado's three most iconic players, it’s no secret that Shilo Sanders is poised to have a big season in 2024. The graduate student safety, who is also coincidentally the son of head coach Deion Sanders, will command the Buffs’ secondary and lay out opponents with his signature huge hits all season.

Shilo played at South Carolina and Jackson State before coming to CU with his dad in 2023. Upon his arrival in Boulder, Shilo broke out and immediately became a fan favorite. Starting at free safety in 2023, Shilo quickly established himself as one of Colorado's top defensive players after totaling 67 tackles, three pass breakups, four forced fumbles, and a pick-six against CSU in week three.

Shilo led the team in total tackles last season and ended up in a tie for the Pac-12 leader in tackles, but don’t expect the same to happen this season. New defensive coordinator Robert Livingston is letting the safeties play deeper and hawk for turnovers, so Shilo won’t have to play shallow and watch the mesh much in 2024.

That’s a good thing, by the way! The coaching staff trusts the defensive front more so they’re letting Shilo and fellow safety Cam’Ron Silmon-Craig range and play more freely. Colorado’s secondary has been one of their biggest strengths so far in the Deion Sanders era, and allowing the safeties to focus more on pass coverage should allow the unit to be even more dominant in 2024.

Not to worry; Shilo will still be laying the boom this year. Only this time, it won’t be out of a desperation blitz because the defensive line can’t stop the run. As long as he can finish tackles and stay healthy, expect a huge season out of Shilo before heading to the pros.
