A look at how the odds have shifted leading up to the draft
We’re just two weeks out from the NFL Draft, and it’s looking like the New Orleans Saints might be going all in for their chance at snagging Colorado quarterback Shedeur Sanders.
Earlier this week, oddsmakers had the Saints at +300 to draft Sanders. Now, they’ve jumped to -130 (DraftKings) — roughly a 56% chance they make the move.
That shift in odds didn’t come out of nowhere. News broke on Friday night that Saints quarterback Derek Carr is dealing with a shoulder injury that might require surgery. Suddenly, being down a quarterback and in possession of a high draft pick, the Saints are in prime position to grab a new franchise guy.
New Orleans would be a great fit for Sanders and his gunslinging playstyle too. New Saints head coach Kellen Moore was a legendary college quarterback for Boise State and has a pension for running a pass-heavy, simplistic West-Coast style offense, not too dissimilar to what Sanders was working with at Colorado.
This seems like a match made in heaven, so what’s complicating things?
Mainly, it’s that the Saints are in a tough spot cap-wise and aren’t exactly built to win immediately. New Orleans GM Mickey Loomis is notorious for putting his team in cap space hell, which makes it extremely difficult for the team to dig itself out of without completely imploding the roster.
Whether the Saints say it out loud or not, drafting Shedeur would be the ultimate reset button for a franchise that badly needs one. He wouldn’t have to play right away, but it would give them a legit long-term plan — and Shedeur could be the type of face-of-the-franchise talent you build around.
New Orleans currently sits at pick No. 9, which might not be high enough to land Sanders. With quarterback-needy teams like Cleveland, New York Giants and Las Vegas picking ahead of the Saints, there’s a real chance that Sanders might not be on the board when New Orleans gets on the clock. Because of that, the question now isn’t whether the Saints want Sanders — it’s whether they’re going to move up and go get him before someone else does.
