Karl Dorrell will roll with the true freshman QB.
Owen McCown will start his second career game against the Arizona Wildcats on Saturday, according to Colorado Buffaloes head coach Karl Dorrell.
The true freshman looked good enough in the game in the UCLA for Dorrell to stick with him after previously starting Brendon Lewis and JT Shrout at the position. McCown threw for 258 yards and touchdown in the 45-17 loss. His yardage was the most by a QB since Sam Noyer threw for the same amount in a 2020 loss to Utah.
Colorado has had one of the worst offenses in the country, but they showed more promise on Saturday than they had before. It’s a low bar — CU had six possessions end without a first down, giving them nineteen such drives on the season — but McCown and the other underclassmen showed some fight.
It’s not all on McCown, but he will be the most important player in a crucial game this weekend. The Buffs have lost their first four games by at least 25 points, the first major conference team to do that since Indiana in 1957, per Brian Howell. There will considerable pressure on Dorrell to be competitive at the very least against a Wildcats team that went 1-11 last season.
