Colorado falls to 0-10 in Big 12 play

The Colorado Buffaloes’ struggles continued in Fort Worth Sunday afternoon, falling to the TCU Horned Frogs by a final score of 68-57 to drop to 0-10 in Big 12 play.

The Buffs got out to a hot start, making all of their first four shots from the floor and shutting down TCU on the defensive floor to take an 8-0 lead to start the game. Colorado would continue shooting the ball well in the first five minutes of play, extending their lead to 13-5.

That’s about where the good news ends for the Buffaloes. Their month-long turnover nightmare continued at Schollmaier, allowing TCU to dictate the pace of the entire game. Colorado turned the ball over 19 times, enabling the Frogs to convert those turnovers into 28 easy points. In comparison, TCU only turned the ball eight times on Sunday.

Colorado dominated the rebounding battle, out-boarding TCU by a margin of 34-22. CU also shot more efficiently than the Horned Frogs from the floor, as the Buffs made 46.7% (21-45) of their FG attempts compared to TCU’s 44.4% (24-54).

Unfortunately, when you turn the ball over 19 times in one game and 11 times more than your opponent, it’s incredibly difficult to dig yourself out of that hole. Despite working the Frogs off the boards and having an efficient scoring day, Colorado’s turnover struggles proved to be too much to overcome, making it the story of the afternoon.

If there was one silver lining to CU’s afternoon in North Texas, it was the performance of sophomore forward Bangot Dak. Dak shined against the Horned Frogs, scoring nine points and snagging 12 boards in Colorado’s loss. On top of that, Dak had a solid game on the defensive floor, coming away with three blocks and two steals. Dak was one of only two Colorado players with a positive +/-, with Trevor Baskin being the other.

Next up for the Buffaloes will be a Rumble in the Rockies showdown with the Utah Utes in Salt Lake City on Wednesday, Feb. 4th. After that, the Buffs will return home to Boulder for a matchup with the #5 Houston Cougars on Saturday, Feb. 8th.

The road’s not getting any easier either, with five of CU’s remaining regular season games coming against opponents ranked in the AP Top 25. The pressure is on for the Buffs to beat the Utes in Salt Lake City, as it’s likely the easiest matchup remaining on their schedule.
