Two NFL Hall of Famers are joining forces in Boulder next season.
For the second time in as many years, an NFL Hall of Famer is coming to Boulder to coach the Colorado Buffaloes. Super Bowl champion and Tampa Bay Buccaneers legendary defensive tackle Warren Sapp is officially joining Deion Sanders’ staff for the upcoming 2024 season.
Sapp told Rich Eisen that his intention was to join Coach Prime’s staff in 2024 during a show in late September, but nothing was set in stone and Deion never spoke on the matter. On Tuesday night, Coach Prime finally made it official by telling Mark Johnson that Sapp is in fact coming to CU next season. Sapp will now bring his immense pass rushing knowledge to Boulder in order to help beef up Colorado’s defense.
“I’m excited about Coach Sapp. He’s a dear friend that I love to life. He’s going to be invaluable, what he brings to the table. The kids are going to love him,” said Deion.
The Buffs’ players are already acquainted with Sapp, as he has spoken to the team on at least one occasion so far in 2023. Apparently the players have already taken a liking to Coach Sapp, after the HOFer spent time in the hot tub chatting it up with Colorado’s defensive linemen.
“The most beautiful moment I’ve seen after practice, [Sapp] was in the hot tub with the whole darn defensive line and he was going over stuff. It was just unbelievable,” said Prime.
It’s currently unclear what specific role Sapp will occupy on Deion’s staff as of now. It seems most likely that Sapp will have a defensive analyst role in 2024, but it’s entirely possible that he could become a full-fledge positional coach for the Buffaloes. We’ll just have to wait until next season to see just how Sapp will fit into the Colorado coaching puzzle.
