Former University of Colorado star running back Rashaan Salaam's 1994 Heisman trophy is up for auction, SCP Auctions announced Tuesday.
Salaam ran away with 1994 Heisman voting, after becoming just the fourth player in college football history at the time to surpass the 2,000-yard mark in rushing. That same year, he also won the Doak Walker Award given to the nation's top running back, as well as the Walter Camp Award for the best player in college football that season.
The former Buff sold his Heisman Trophy to a sports memorabilia dealer in 2013, who then resold it to its present owner that same year. Accompanying the trophy is a letter from Salaam, acknowledging the sale.
Rashaan Salaam died last year as a result of suicide at the age of 42. After his untimely passing, former CU coach Bill McCartney -- who recruited Salaam -- said, "He was very coachable. He had a happy heart. I loved being around him. He didn't take himself too seriously, and he always credited those around him, especially his offensive line."
The trophy will be part of an exclusive online auction, with bidding to open Monday, January 8th, 2018. It will conclude Saturday, January 20th at www.scpauctions.com. A portion of the proceeds from the sale will be donated to CTE research.
Previously auctioned off Heisman Trophies include Larry Kelley's 1936 trophy for $328,100 (1999); O.J. Simpson's 1968 trophy for $255,00 (1999); Bruce P. Smith's 1941 trophy for $395,240 (2005); Charlie White's 1979 trophy for $293,750 (2006); and Paul Hornug's duplicate 1956 trophy for $250,000 in 2000.
SCP Auctions officials expect Salaam's Heisman trophy to sell for more than $300,000.

Amazing it is that valuable and I read somewhere Rashaan was using it as a doorstop.

Would be a nice move (for a donor) to buy it, then either donate it to the University or at least lend it to the University. If only I'd have won that Powerball...

I believe there is one in the Champions Center. Saw an piece on this last night during the news. They guy is selling it and donating 100% of the profits to head injury research. His daughters both have had major trauma during sports and an accident for one of them. He is really trying to do something special with this one. Current high bid as of last night was $96K

Yeah I thought there school gets a duplicate trophy when one of their players wins the Heisman. Is that not the case?
It is the case.

Everyone should remember all the hullabaloo about OJ Simpson's trophy being displayed at USC.

Whoever buys it should let it be displayed at the College Football Hall of Fame once they officially elect Rashaan posthumously!!!

The amount of hardware that the cross country team has collected over the years is impressive. In addition to the natty hardware, the bounty of P12 conference championship trophies is a sight to behold.
Yeah. All they had on display was football stuff.

If memory serves the player gets a copy and the University he attended gets one too. That's why there is one in Dal Ward. And another up for auction.

I would totally buy it and donate it to someone if I had the money.

Not sure the school needs both of them, maybe Rashaan's old high school?

Oh no. This is so sad.

I dunno what's the right thing to do, but I do know that if I won the Powerball I'd buy the statue and give it to his grieving mom.

RIP.

Just a sad situation all around it looks like. Wish I could afford it, I'd make sure his family had it.
