Ok, I did it again. I wrote an email to the admin in response to his email I got yesterday highlighting the academic accomplishments of CU over the fall. I sent it to Benson, DiStefano and Bohn. I know I am probably wasting my time, but what the hell.
Hi President Benson,
I would like to see these communications to be more inclusive and contain updates on the Athletic Department. A great first article would include a feature from Mike Bohn on the vision for athletics and the strategy for brining it to reality. Right now we are in a dangerous position of losing many supporters of the football program due to the complete meltdown that we are witnessing on the field on a weekly basis. When we ask questions of the Chancellor or others in leadership positions, we are told that boosters need to donate. That is an interesting strategy. I am not aware of any business that asks investors to blindly invest their funds without some vision and plan for the future. There needs to be a compelling reason to place your investments into a business or a savvy investor will take their funds and place them where they have a better idea of the expected return. These are simple and basic lessons that are taught in entry level classes in the Leeds School of Business.
One way to unite the entire University community would be to make your communications more inclusive. The AD, anf the football program specifically, is a critical part of CU and provides many benefits. It is a fantastic marketing tool when it performs at an acceptable level. The basketball program is now doing this and we are reaping benefits from it. But football is critical to our AD. It pays the bills that keep many of of none revenue generating programs, many of which are women sports. It is the sport that unites and connects many of the Alumni with the University. In order to strengthen these ties and open the wallets of these Alumni, it is now time to explain to them the vision and plan for the AD and more specifically the football program. A successful academic institution and a successful football program are not mutually exclusive. One serves the other when both are held to high standards and they deliver on them. You lay out our accomplishments and expectations on the academic side very well. I only ask that you do the same for the AD and specifically the football team.
You accomplish what you focus on and right now, we are not accomplishing much on the football field. Please start to reach out to the alumni and fans and lay out the vision, plan and expectations for the football program. You might just be surprised how many would step up and open their wallets up and donate more if you did.
