this is the percentage of starts by a freshman (redshirt or true) at CU dating back to 1999:

2013 - 7.6 (through three games)
2012 - 28.0
2011 - 11.5
2010 - 12.9
2009 - 10.6
2008 - 15.5
2007 - 18.5
2006 - 6.4
2005 - 3.5
2004 - 3.8
2003 - 12.1
2002 - 2.9
2001 - 2.4
2000 - 13.6
1999 - 8.0

In the last 14-plus years, when the freshmen starts has been below 10.5 percent, CU has gone 45-34 (.570). When the number has been above 10.5 percent, the Buffs have gone 31-59 (.344) and have not had a winning record any of those seasons.

Playing this many frosh is a direct result of failing to retain (much less develop) players. How bad was HaLk at this? How the hell was Embree WORSE?

fify.

I'd argue that this is one area that Embree can't really be judged. He was definitely favoring the young guys, but that's what you do when you know you are not competitive and you are building for the future. And in most cases, the young talent was more ready than the older, with few exceptions.

There were a few guys he could have and should have redshirted.

But I thought we need to get guys on the field to "see what they can do" and "get valuable game experience"?

Every time you burn a redshirt you're trading a 22/23 year old senior for a 18/19 year old freshman. These numbers and the win totals in each respective season should not come as a surprise.

It'd be nice put a run of relatively balanced recruiting classes together too.

Hawk was all over the place as far as what he needed in a recruiting class and what he'd end up with. He always seemed to be pretty haphazard with what he was targeting.

Embree tried to fill the entire 2-deep of the DL in one class, then only had room for 2 OL, which we're paying for right now. I know they had holes to fill, but overloading a position in one class is not the way to fix it.

This clearly is probably our most major issue, together with inept coaching. What makes it even worse is coupling this with a lack of effort. I guess that is a coaching issue too, but we have seen inconsistent effort from kids for far too long.

yea, hawk didn't have an identity on defense or offense that sure didn't help.

Good stuff, Snow. If you knew nothing about CU football, you could read this and pretty much say we've sucked for 7 years.

I lay this all on Suckins. Embree had 2 years and only one recruiting class. Suckins had a great recruiting class in 05 and squandered it because he either got the wrong kids or didn't know how to develop them. Since I see Scott playing for the Giants now, I'm going with the latter.

That would be Da'Rel Scott, not our very own Darrell Scott. Our Scott was a bum who never made it past one training camp with the cowboys.

Darrell Scott was signed by the Cowboys last year and didn't make it out of the preseaon. Not sure what he is up to now. Probably donuts.

Every year it seems like we are staring one of the youngest teams in that nation. We always get our hopes up that it means we are going to be good and experienced in 3 years. That never happens.

It's awful. We need as many redshirts as possible. Embree should have redshirted Yuri, but didn't. We aren't going to be pretty good until we have 5 year linemen on both sides of the ball regularly. That won't happen for a while.

LOL! I never saw his named spelled, just heard it over the din at the bar...and it sounded like Darrell.

Laughing at anyone who says Embree had to play young guys or only got one true recruiting class. No one forced Embree to take a big transition class. No one forced him to overload on DL/ignore OL in 2012 (as TD said above). No one forced Embree to mostly fill a small class before the 2013 class even started.

This team is young, but I am really hopeful. Look at the turnaround. And these guys can recruit...Gillam, Adkins II, Awuzie. The South will rise again as we and the AZ schools get better.

When I saw Darrell Scott in Austin before he left I was amazed at how fat he was. everything he did in warm-ups and drills he finished last. I remember thinking the top 3 recruits that year (Julio Jones, Terrell Pryor, and Scott) and we land the Michelin man, what a waste of talent.

Gotta play your guys.
