"He's as sharp of a thinker that, honestly, I've ever had. And I've had some of the best in the world. He might not be right up there with Willis and Bowman yet, but mentally he's very good. He knows this system well."

I'm guilty and I think that many Buffs fans may need to re-think their perceptions of Gamboa. He wasn't a popular recruit and there were less than flattering reports his initial camp. I think that has stuck and he's not getting the credit he deserves for leading the team in tackles last season or being a guy that Leavitt has this much confidence in as only a sophomore. He's going to be a major player in this defense this year and the next two. We should appreciate him more.
 
Perhaps he was out of position against fast teams last year, but the guy isn't fast. As long as he continues to improve and be in position he could be solid and a guy that can be relied upon.

Having a history of solid linebackers makes it hard for us to be objective sometimes.
 
I didn't see JL praising his speed or athleticism. He always seemed a half step too slow for PAC12 play, but JL is the expert.

Some of you guys are awfully sensitive about any sort of slight toward players. The linebackers lost us multiple games last year in conference play, Gamboa included.

First game was encouraging, but none of the linebackers were challenged in space. That changes dramatically in conference play.

To be fair, Gamboa was the poster child on this site for Baer's lazy recruiting, dismissed as a contributor well before anyone on this sight had actually seen him actually play a down of football. At the minimum, that was wrong and imbalanced.

I happen to think the kid is a very good football player who is a tad small and doesn't have the extra speed/explosiveness you'd like to see from an undersized guy. But solid nonetheless.
 
There are plenty of LB's who have been very successful despite their size and speed being less than ideal. If they are relentless intelligent and can play good fundamental football, they can still make a big impact.

Good for Gamboa. Hope he continues to improve.
 
I heard the same thing about this dude from T Tech, Zach Thomas or something. I'm not comparing the two. You can make up issues by being able to read plays and getting in position. Duff does make a good point though, let's see how he does in space.

My comment didn't have to do with being sensitive towards a player. We had the best game in years, the D played lights out, Gamboa played really well and there is a positive article about him and your first reaction is to put the player down. There will be plenty of time for justified criticism this year, this wasn't one of them. Can't you just let fans enjoy a win instead of always looking at the negatives, even when one doesn't exist?

Yes the first game was encouraging for the linebackers.So why make a snide, unnecessary comment? If he struggles against a spread team like you're alluding to, wouldn't that be the right time to make your observation? All I know is JMFL thinks this guy is a really good payer and makes up with his physical limitations by being a heady player. I think I'll take his expertise over yours.

Hopefully we won't find anything to bitch about today when we win by 40+. Yeah right.

A single interception by Sefo or FG while the 1's are still playing, and I fully anticipate this place on semi-fire through kickoff for Michigan.
