Longtime lurker that never posts but appropriate time to post an email exchange with Benson. Me:
Mr. Benson,
The lackluster to borderline pathetic performance of the football team concerns me as a fan and alumni of the University of Colorado. The facilities are in desperate need of upgrading. The current coaching staff includes a head coach that lacks previous head coaching and coordinator experience, and two coordinators that lack previous coordinating experience. It shows. The team is out coached every week by opposing teams. As a fan, this has taken away what used to be a fun part of my life. As an alumni who is married to a CU law school alumni it is embarrassing. My co-workers openly mock the University of Colorado. A pathetic football team stains alumni and diminishes opportunities to attract new students. Long-term failure on the football field threatens all athletic programs that are paid for with football royalties. The crowds will not remain forever if the results do not improve. Please reconsider your lack of enthusiasm for supporting the football program.
Thanks
Dear AKFan,
Thank you for your email. I agree with you that our athletic facilities need upgraded. I have toured them and have seen the need. We are in the midst of a feasibility study to see how our donors are willing to be involved in athletic facility upgrades. The funding reality is upgrades will cost somewhere in the nine figures. It’s fair to say we should do this, but as the person responsible for funding at the university, it’s also fair to proceed prudently. We are looking for serious, committed people to join us and contribute to our efforts, and I hope you will be one of those people. If you have additional specific suggestions for meeting the funding goal, I would be happy to listen.
I disagree with your assessment of our coaches. Coach Embree and his staff have played and coached the game at its highest levels. He has coached alongside a national championship-winning coach and a two-time Super Bowl-winning coach.
We are not happy with where the team is but we are committed to its success. We are rebuilding, which is neither quick nor easy. We have high expectations and we expect results. We are doing all we can to achieve them, but we also understand the need for patience.
Sincerely,
Bruce D. Benson
President
