Ringo's midseason report: Psyche of the players

One of the biggest problems Embree faced when he took over receives relatively little attention. It is the psyche of the players he inherited. Many of the seniors on this year's roster were taught earlier in their careers to remove emotion from the process. Under the former coaching staff, players who reacted with too much emotion to wins and losses, particularly losses, were punished. Some saw decreased playing time as a result. The current coaching staff values the emotional aspect of the game and it wants players to show that passion on the field. But getting them to do so is an ongoing process and it might be that turnover in the program is required before the Buffs hit the field on Saturdays with the right attitude.

Didn't see this posted anywhere, not sure if anyone has commented on it.

But, really, you gotta be ****ing kidding me. Punishing players for being too emotional about wins and losses? I understand wanting to keep emotions under control, but come on, emotion is part of the game and process. It certainly helps to explain some of the "go thru the motions" play of some of the upper classmen on the field at times. Thanks, Hawk, instilling that attitude in kids for 5 years has gotten us where we are. This is why I believe Embree has so much work to do on changing attitude and culture, it's gonna take time-- 2, 3, 4 years.

I always thought the "avoid the peaks and valleys" babble from HaLk was a bit of urban legend. My god, he actually is as bad as this board portrays him. Wow.

Could this be an integral part of the Marquez Herrod swan song? This is why the coaching change should have come a year earlier.

This. Keeping El Dickhead for 2010 only set this program back badly for another year-- a year which we didn't have already

Herrod's situation sure fits, doesn't it? When you have a coach who paints over the wall that lists big wins in the history of the program, you have a very big problem. That sent a message to the players that big wins are not important. They were taught not to show emotion for 5 years. Not one of these sophomores, juniors or seniors has heard about winning is important. Not one of them was encouraged to play with emotion. It appears that only one player who graduated last year was encouraged to be a leader over the past 5 years, and yet what we saw was leapfrog on the sideline. I'm not going to call out individual players, but they need something and they need it bad. Augie Tammariello was only chest high to some of our linemen, but he got under their chin and absolutely lit a fire. I'm sure Embree and staff are working on it. It might take a couple of classes to graduate for the message to sink in and take hold. Some people won't ever understand how bad Hawkins became. I guess more of them do now.

No emotions? No wonder Missouri had so much fun ****ing our team.

Hawkins is by far the worst coach in CU history...he has Fairbanks beat by the country mile for that honor.

I dunno, BnB, the fukbuks era was really, really bad. CF was a failure, and didn't care one iota about the program, the players, the fans, the school. He took his paychecks and walked away grinning.

This is a race between a blazing incompetent and power-trip con artist. There is no winner.

On correlation however,

the fukbuks fiasco lead to the McCarthy era.....

the taLkins whiff will lead to .........

I go back and forth between which coach was worse - Fairbanks or Hawkins. The Hawkins fiasco is so fresh in my memory that it's hard not to say he was the worst. But I do remember the powder blue uniforms and losing to Drake, too. That sucked. We were pathetic. Literally on the verge of dismantling the football program completely. Fairbanks nearly bankrupted the entire athletic department all on his own, and he really didn't give a **** what happened to it after he left. Somewhere, deep down inside, I believe Hawkins cares. He's just an incompetent imbecile. Fairbanks was destructive.

Would you rather have someone destroy your program through apathy or through systematic implementation of an awful culture?

I was a student during the dark Fairbanks era (and Mallory). I really think the program was at historical depths under CF, nobody gave a damn - I think we averaged about 35K/game if we were lucky. He simply did not care, his primary focus was on his new pair of shoes every week. Bad times indeed.

The problem with Fairbanks wasn't limited to the football program, though. He nearly destroyed the entire athletic department. Seriously. It was more than apathy on his part, or so it seemed. It was apathy mixed in with large doses of entitled arrogance.

I was just focusing on how he was different from HaLkins.

Man. This thread makes me want to cry.

Better hold off, DBT. . . it could affect your playing time. Screw this man. Football is a game of passion. This totally substantiates my suspicions regarding the older guys on this team. They should be the ones kicking ass in practice every week. Instead they have been brainwashed into emotionless automatons. WE HAVE A FRIGGIN' TEAM OF EUNUCHS!!! Someone needs to start the face-punching! That said, I am confident that EB has already lit this fire.

...if it would have let us trade HaLkins for Willingham.

My wife and I always disagree when this comes up. What I do know is that both of these guys are total frauds.

UW fans would have taken Hawkins over Ty. In a hearbeat. CU fans would probably have taken Ty over Hawkins...

It turns out both coaches disciplined players for being emotional? Wow just wow. I know if you got jacked up after a great play for Willingham, you were benched. If you wanted to go to the gym more than 2 days per week (and risk injury for over-lifting), you wouldn't be playing on the field. If you dared show emotion at any time during a game or practice? You wouldn't be playing... if you wanted to talk to the coach about something, just make sure it doesn't interfere with his Tee time.

Ascending the coaching ranks:
1. Step one, don't bother recruiting against the big boys. Go find some unpolished gems that were maybe offered by FCS teams.
2. Teach comportment. No emotion allowed, no real strength and conditioning allowed, just worship the coach in all facets of life.
3. Tune out the media and fans. They should not be privvy to practices, your thoughts regarding game performance, your thoughts about the direction of the program.
4. Long-standing season ticket holders are meaningless. They're either so old they don't stand up and cheer, or they're young enough that they still do. Not sure which is worse.
5. Eliminate hope, it's how you gain true power..
6. There is no such thing as a real victory. Only moral victories count... We don't need others to feel good about us if we feel good about ourselves.
