RIP Cliff Meely

The ever-present heart and soul of the program. CU hoops won't be the same without him sitting courtside.

:sad1: Saw him all the time at the Keg. Rest in Peace Mr. Meely.

He led Colorado to the Big Eight title in 1968-69, as the Buffaloes were 21-7 with a 10-4 mark in league play. A three-time All-Big Eight team member, he earned first-team All-America honors as a senior, and set 16 school and eight conference records during his career. Overall, the Buffs won 49 games in his time here under late coach Russell “Sox” Walseth, the fourth most over any three-year span in CU history, with his jersey number (20) just one of two retired in CU annals.

Meely anchored one of the most impressive three-year runs in Colorado history, during which CU posted 49 wins. Meely spent six seasons in the NBA with the Houston Rockets and Los Angeles Lakers. He earned numerous distinctions after graduating, a place on the Associated Press' all-time Big Eight Conference first team and the NCAA Silver Anniversary Award.

Meely still holds the CU scoring mark for most points a single game (47) and owns five of the top-8 scoring games in school history.
Entering the 2011-12 season, he ranks second for most points scored in a season (729), second in career rebounding (971), and is fourth in career points (1,940). His name remains either at or near the top in over a dozen statistical categories, and he still owns the two top single season scoring averages in CU history: 28.0 as a senior in 1970-71, and 23.8 as a sophomore in 1968-69.

The Buffs HAVE to honor him next year somehow. Period.

People give lots of credit to Bohn for the rise of our bball program (this does NOT include me), but I say he could have done a little more. Meely is one of our greatest Buffs - this is sad, and I wish the program had honored him while alive.

RIP

Just name that statue over by the Fountain at the UMC, "Meeley, No. 20!" It looks just like him shooting a jumper.

RIP, Cliff. Glad you were able to experience the Buff basketball resurgence before you passed.

Sad day for buffs basketball. Glad he was able to see the program change course and have more success before he went though.

I don't cry much but I teared up when I read of his passing. He may have been the greatest CU basketball player ever. But on top of that he was just a very sweet man. Quiet and unassuming and always displayed a lot of Class. He passed way too young.

Meely was actually one of the man guys I wrote about this summer. This is just a reminder of how great he was for this school.

* 1968-69 All-Big 8 Conference First Team

The school’s all-time leader in points per game and rebounds per game, Cliff Meely was named an All-American during the 1971 season. Meely was named to the All-Big 8 First team all three years he was at Colorado and in 1969 was named the Big 8 Player of the Year along with Big 8 Sophomore of the Year. Add it all up and he was not only one of the members of the 1970’s Big 8 All-Decade First Team, but in 1996 he was named to the AP’s All-time Big 8 Conference Basketball first team along with Wayman Tisdale (Oklahoma), Danny Manning (Kansas), Jo Jo White (Kansas State) and Rolando Blackman (Kansas State).

The big man was athletic enough to play all five positions on the court and according to Coach Sox Walseth, Meely was “the most complete player” he had ever coached. Meely set sixteen school records while at CU and eight Big 8 conference records.

Meely was drafted in both the NBA and ABA drafts, and signed with the San Diego/Houston Rockets. He spent five years with Houston before being traded to the Los Angeles Lakers for his last season in the NBA. Meely finished with career averages of 8.4 points and 5.4 rebounds per game. In 1996, Meely also was one of six former collegiate athletes to earn the NCAA’s Silver Anniversary Award which is presented to athletes who have gained recognition or done great work in their postgraduate careers. The Buffs have retired the number 20 that he wore during his time in Boulder.

I met him once. He was a client at my family's travel agency. This would have been around 1985 or so. This was the depths of CU basketball. We had hired Tom Miller as coach. Cliff says "miller will get this thing going. We hired the right guy". I expect he was always positive about the program, in spite of many reasons to not be. That's dedication. He will be missed.

RIP. I've only recently read about him, but seems like a class act, not to mention those incredible numbers. One of the all-time great Buffs.
