Sorry this is long, just my random thoughts on the day - not the game. I would be interested to get Mr. @unionbuff ’s take on the game and atmosphere as well but thought I would share my thoughts.
The whole atmosphere was amazing and definitely one of the best games I have ever been to. We drove up in the morning, left our car at a hotel in DTLA and took the subway/ train from there. We stumbled onto the parade after we got of the train right as OU went by and UGA was coming up, so we saw all we need there and headed to the alumni tailgate.
The alumni tailgate was set up in the same place CU had theirs but they tied it into the fan zone so you went through security there and walked straight in to the venue. It was different than CU’s in that you prepaid $160 and got all the food/ drink you wanted (cu’s is free but you pay for food and drink). It was packed out and they brought in fan favorites such as Chik Fila and Krispy Kreme on top of some local food like pinks and a few others. They had a band with the auburn game ona big screen above them.
We left there and went in the game. Since we had already been though security I walked in the Rose Bowl beers in hand. We learned upon walking in that I bought tickets on the edge of the UGA fans and were really a little more in the OU section, primarily by students or at least recent grads. As a whole they were pretty annoying and drunk (as you would expect). We continued to buy beers to get on their level and by the halftime when they were way ahead they were slightly less annoying. They continued to chant SEC to the UGA fans, as they would score which then UGA fans would chant back as they started coming back.
Interesting notes, the OU fans around us continued to comment on how big the UGA players were. Thought that was odd coming from OU but they were right. The stadium was probably 3/4 UGA fans. It felt that way but I really noticed it when they do this cheer going into the fourth quarter where they all turned on their cell phone lights and wave their arms. A lot of the OU fans around us said they definitely felt outnumbered.
All in all a great experience. Leaving was kind of a cluster, but that always seems the case. We gave up on the shuttle and walked back to downtown Pasadena, on a walk that felt like we were in Athens given almost everyone was an UGA fan. Gave me time to sober up and get one of those bacon wrapped sausages from a cart. I had been craving one since the CU/ UCLA game.
