Shunned by Duane Akina, Greg Brown and now little Stoops makes a decision...Ryan Walters the GA. Great for him and his career! This may be a little soon, I Hope he handles the pressure well and CU just runs it down their throat so he can keep his job. I think he will do well as long as he doesn't teach these angles:

The kitty blog doesn't seem to happy about the hire, calling it a fiscal move.

Shunned by Greg Brown? That's some interesting spin on someone's mentor keeping him in the situation that was the best for his career.

i think what he is saying stoops was shunned by akina and brown... not walters

Ryan always seemed to be the kind of player who would make an ideal coach. His faults came from athletic shortcomings that he tried to make up for with preparation and intelligence. He got a lot of grief because he seemed to get beat a lot but many of those situations were were he read what was going on and went to cover for someone else getting their a step slow and looking like he blew the coverage.

It's pretty rare that the great athletes translate into great coaches, the best coaches seem to be the guys who made the best of limited talent with hard work and technique.

I hope Ryan does very well and has a successful coaching career (except against CU.)

The main issue with Walters during his playing career had nothing to do with athleticism, it was staying healthy. He started a lot of games, but he was always dinged up. He also usually missed 1-2 games a year.

Athletic shortcomings? Huh?

Ryan came in as a very good athlete. I should have specified that he seemed to lose speed each year as he battled the injuries, some of it probably the result of injuries, some of it the result of playing with injuries. You are righ in that he missed a number of games and seemed to play a lot of other games at less that 100%. This is a testimony to how tough he was as a player but some of that toughness contributed to the injuries, he was willing to mix it up more than was healthy for a guy his size.
