The news of missions tonight, made me think of Sam and I don't think I've seen this posted. Sam received this honor and I think his ceiling is a lot higher than many thought here. Guy has a lot of size to put on, but I'd expect him to be in the discussion for PT at the Derek McCartney OLB position for the next 4 years.

I think he'll make an impact at OLB in 2017 by getting up around 250 lbs this offseason and then probably grow into our DE position that Samson played.

Really liking our LB corp for the 2017 season.

I said "We'll see" because it is worth noting he was recruited to the 4-3. He may not necessarily have a true position in the 3-4.

Just seems like we've recruited over him at any position he would land/develop into.

There is always room for a good athlete who has a high motor.

You may be right from a standpoint that with the guys we have been recruiting he may never be a full time guy for us but I wouldn't mind seeing a guy who can be a situational specialist who rotates in for passing situations or when we need an OLB who can set the edge against the running game.

We won't know how he fits until we actually get to see him on the field but a guy doesn't have to be a starter to be a contributor. I'm betting that he finds a way to contribute.

Based on what? High School rankings? Let the kid show what he has before we put everyone on the depth chart please. Nobody coming in has done anything yet to justify the above until they show it. Stinkers come in all the time. This kid showed well in the fall, but will need to continue to beef up and probably plays at 270+, which he's not close to yet.

If Bennion is going to be a starter here, I expect it will be as our 5-technique DE as a puts weight on over the next 2 or 3 years. 2017 is probably a transition year where he's only able to get up to the 245 or 250 lb range, so he'd likely spend the season backing up at OLB. More likely in the role Gilbert had before Derek got hurt of being on a "go" as a 4th pass rusher almost always when on the field (when defense isn't in the base nickel).

He's also like 40 pounds heavier already and is no where near the athlete Gilbert is
I was referring to the height comment in regards to Gilbert. If he is 40 pounds bigger, then he can definitely put on weight easily. Hadn't heard that, thanks.

Bennion was maybe 235 lbs at the start of this season, which is lighter than when he left for his mission 3 years ago. He's still working his body back. Once that corner turns, and it seems like it might be, I think he'll start gaining weight quickly.

I was wondering where he was at.

15 quality pounds isn't unusual for a naturally large guy in a quality program. If he can play next season at 250 or more he can be at least a situational substitute.

The scout team award usually means that the guy is a consistent hard worker. Look forward to seeing him next season.

I remember reading he was way down in weight, just hadn't heard he was 40 pounds bigger at this point.

This. The quality of your backups, especially on defense, where there's a lot of rotation, is usually the difference between a close game and a blow out.
