Samson Kafovalu - impact player?

As a true frosh and soph, we saw the flashes. We also heard the whispers from around the program that he needed to grow up (later evidenced by game suspensions, missing spring ball and not being part of the team in the fall of 2014).

But if he has grown up now and is taking his business seriously? Watch out.

From the ESPN blog (https://espn.go.com/blog/pac12/post/_/id/84843/five-players-with-something-to-prove):

According to one Colorado staffer, he's been "tossing linemen around like rag dolls."

Kafovalu, McCartney, Tupou, Jackson, Carrell and Robbins. All of the sudden this looks, on paper, to be pretty strong DL. No Kool Aid...gonna wait to see how they play this fall...but good news from the worst player group last season.

I think we can be confident that we have guys who can hold up to Pac-12 caliber football and that we now have depth of those kinds of guys.

What we don't know is if any of them can be a true difference maker as a disruptive force on the field.

The competent depth is a significant improvement. But there's that whole other level needed to be found beyond that.

Further good news is that it should make the oline better. Finally facing at least decent competition in practice.

Could also mean our scout team oline needs work.

I think "needs work" is built into the definition of "scout team". :wink2:

Pretty sure that Samson practices against the 1s and 2s, though.

Samson is going against guys like Kelly, Callahan, Huckins, Kough, and Wiefels for the most part. He may be going against Arvia or Darby at times, but almost all of the guys he is going against in practice are guys who have either performed at the Pac 12 level a bit or are solid OL, this likely says more about Samson than the OL.

"Conrad Obi is unblockable".

Pardon me for my skepticism of the hype around a single player in the Spring.

Every year during the spring there are stories about a player that is set to break out or be that impact player.

Every year I kill another large portion of my liver watching my team win two games.

Put me in the sprint practice means nothing and I will believe it when it happens on the field in a game category.

I'm with you. I mean, it's always good to hear this kind of stuff rather than the opposite, but it's not predictive.

P.S. I saw some of those practices with Obi and it's true... none of the interior OLs could block him. Particularly bad at the C position. I guess it was a predictive quote in a way.

Just saying. This is one of the first Spring's where we have had players who can play at this level

You might want to tap the brakes a bit. We've heard all this before. Thus, the reference to Conrad Obi being unblockable. Every year, we get a new story about how some guy is just absolutely tearing it up. I think last year it was Shaver IIRC. We don't have the first idea of how good this team really is.

All I am saying is that Samson isn't going against a bunch of walk-ons like he would have 2 or 3 or 4 years ago.

I think the only guy I remember truly backing the hype was Gillam in 2013. Does not happen often.

But Samson has been on the field before and has been impressive at times. There is a difference here.
