BOULDER — Colorado coach Mike Sanford called on supporters of CU Athletics to become involved with the newly formed Buffs4Life NIL Collective at his weekly Tuesday press conference.

Love it.

"We're in deep with a recruit, or a transfer, and even sometimes a personal connection to that transfer," Sanford said. "We're on the phone, everything's good, there's going to be an official visit and then all of a sudden it goes completely silent. You can't get a text back, you can't get any phone calls back."

Then, Sanford said, CU coaches discover that the particular player has found an NIL deal at another school. "Literally a $300,000 or $400,000 deal is on the table," he said.

The environment is, quite simply, the new reality of college athletics.

"This is real," Sanford said, "and this is where we are stepping into this space as a football program. So I'm calling on former Buffs players, I'm calling on people in the CU community that support football and want us to have a great product on the field. This is where we have to go. This is not something that's just going to happen … It doesn't matter if it's a small gift or a major gift, everything is going to help get us to where we want to get … this is going to be a game-changing piece of the puzzle for our program going forward."

Interim coach who is most likely not going to be here next year urges everyone to contribute to NIL.

Meanwhile, nothing ever from RG, And Kardbooard could never be bothered to address this issue publicly. These people should have been on a bullhorn regarding NIL.

Bingo! Why is Rick George not STRONGLY advocating publicly for the Collective which will help the football program, for which he is trying to hire a new football coach? The answer is the small-thinker believes it will take away from fund raising for the Athletic Department

Football IS the Athletic Department...
Right but RG is afraid the donations to the AD, which fund facilities, projects, etc are going to dry up in favor of donations going to NIL to pay players.

He’s not wrong in that regard. There is definitely a finite amount of money people are willing to give and I doubt NIL brings out more donors

this is the rg concern near as i can tell... they want CU to get the donor dollars which are often fickle. if donors jump on the NIL train, the CUAD seems to fear that they will receive less.

that doesn't seem to be how it is working at other peer institutions.... they seem to be managing both facilities and program improvements and getting players paid via the NIL.

also, being against it is a bad look for CU because it is basically saying they don't want the players to get any just reward from their efforts.

all this needs to change.

Hard to say. Big money programs might not have an issue with donors just opening wallets even more to fund NIL while maintaining general AD commitments, but I would bet most programs that don’t have a massive donor base are having this dilemma.

Without diving into school/AD financials it’s hard to say if they are taking on tons of debt in order to fund facility and other AD projects as donor money shifts to NIL.

It would be great to see a NIL program like Texas has. A section of donors/boosters donate their collective donations to the OL, another to QB's, etc... Texas OL, for instance, each get 700k. Then, you have set individual donors who contribute to those high level signees, giving them additional $ beyond the set position NIL that donors are providing.
Yes, it's an ugly business, but it is a business. If CU administration does not get in front of this and provide an actual effective NIL program, the 4* and 5* players will never step foot on campus

Agree that is probably his thought process. You know what dries up donations faster RG? Putting a pathetic POS product on the field for 20 years.

How involved can a school official be in an NIL collective? I have no clue what the rules are anymore. I thought NIL money is not to be connected directly to the school administration. But this is the wild, wild, west where rules seem to be non existent.

Way to make the job less attractive by not promoting the NIL collective RG. Malpractice
Went to KSU game. Seemed like every other scoreboard message was about their NIL.

RG’s history with collectives is sketchy. At least he’s not getting in the way of this one.

But where is the B4L marketing campaign? Was their even a press release? It’s their program, the 15 percent carry supports their core mission, shouldn’t they have more than a crowdsourcing web site.

I’m getting skewered on 247, but this seems - at least so far - like a nickel and dime effort than won’t come close to leveling the playing field for a 300-400K effort for a recruit like Sanford described in the recent article.

RG would be pissed if a booster wanted to step up with a million dollar donation but gave it to NIL rather than the CU AD. That's the issue in a nutshell and why so little effort has been made.

There was an ad for it on the radio during the ASU game and it was on the screen during a break for basketball scrimmage. But it's been pretty minimal.

This whole NIL thing reaffirms for me Tucker probably didn't just leave for the money...he could see this AD has no interest in doing what it takes to compete...on top of the other roadblocks the AD and admin put in the way of success.

He left for the money.

Todd actually seems keyed in. I’m terrified that my pessimism (re: prez hire) has fully morphed into optimism.

Knowing CU luck….. Now that Todd has won me over, it’s only a matter of time until a domestic issue/pedo/etc is levied against him and we promote one of Phil’s acolytes in response.

Hopefully since he was an internal hire we wouldn't lose him over a shift in political control of the BoR.
